I listened to the chatter.

Food day in the office
And it is amazing
How the conversations change.

It is all about food.

As if there was a starving emptiness
That people longed to fill
So in salivating sentences
The recipes for social
Are written on my ears

I never was one to use recipes
But instead enjoy
Creating tastes from ideas
And find the hearing constricting
My throat as I am asked
To join in

Perhaps I am not meant
For pot luck dishes
Prepared in shallow
Pans

You do manage to pack the punch
in though, don't you?

Don't EVEN say...
what you normally say.

You're a writer.
And a good one.
Deal with it.

Ron,

I love this poem and the  ~almost~  nonchalant way it began... picking up momentum of wisdom as you wrote.

Liked:

" a starving emptiness"

but, especially liked the last stanza, I related so, I grinned from ear to ear. It is great. You captured much.

Warm regards, Pat

Pat.. glad you enjoyed. Just a passing thought as I sat here this morning. The smell of food now permeates the offices and I think little will be done that is meaningful today...

Ms Devine... empty calories and I am fed enough of those already.. Thanks for dropping in.

Ron

You would probably outdo them all with one of your adlib meals, and you wouldn't have to say a word.

I can so relate to the creative cookery...It just loses something in the confines of the recipe...That remains the same. ThisDiamond

Ron - nice observations.

Diamond.. is ther any other way to truly enjoy cooking?

Christopher: Today it is a chili cook off of sorts and I have been elected the judge. Nothing worse than having to judge other peoples cooking... Can I say what I really think?????  As for being a bad cook... I could tell you stories about bad cooks... ( laughing)

I'm a listener and it's really strange sometimes to sit back and hear what people say...and what they don't say.

Can you say what you really think?  Of course you can.  Will you?

Now there's the question.

yes, cpat, but sometimes more meaning and love is found in so called nothingness, or
meaninglessness........well something like that........dont you see this?

Inked... there is a difference in finding meaning in simple things or in simple pleasures and enduring meaningless. Simple pleasures and play... is a lot different than the wrappings put on civility in a lot of offices. Ever see them feed sharks on TV?

yes, maybe,
i guess my work environment, even when we
are just sitting around and doing "nothing"
is more plesant, perhaps.....?

I work in web development and database management... the feel of things can at times be stifling and at others simple brutal. It is amazing how many people know everything... just amazing....

thanks to both of you for taking the time.. this was really just a passing thought this morning as I sat and listened to nothings..

Beware the burn in those shallow pans...try the 6 qt. stock pot, simmer and stir slowly --enjoyed your observations from the plastic jungle (my office nickname)!

Toe..the rather loud nothing conversation was taking place right outside my office... couldn't find enough cotton fast enough to stuff it in my ears like mama taught me so had to hear it... So... there I sat listening to the prattle...and the posturing.. thinking about how I'd rather be looking at a pretty woman or better yet talking to one...so I could make my own shallow conversation

Sandpiper.. Plastic jungle ( laughing) I like that... always amazed me on food days, people act like they haven't eaten in days.... It's a great display of greed and glutony...

Appreciate you both stopping by... and thanks for the words...

I just love it when someone writes something so tasteful with just ordinary ingrediants.
This is Food for thought.  Enjoyed very much Cpat.

Salty... it is the ordinary and common that surrounds us. All we have to do is look at it in a different light or angle and it will write itself... appreciate you dropping in.
this little piece has gotten a lot more attention than it deserves...
