I still remember
the rhythm of the swing,
the way the axe sliced
the chilled air as it fell
upon the frozen stumps
in stinging bites of chips
flying through sub zero temps
while critters scurried
from tree to tree
between icicle tipped arctic boughs,
amidst background squeals
of hungry sows and
squawking hens
waiting for breakfast.
Alaska.
I will miss your
Rainbow Dancing Lights,
most often named Aurora;
the long dark nights
that tumble into days
when the sun barely peeks
in low arc over Denali's face,
majestic mountain
misnamed for a politician
who never (to my knowledge)
ever showed his face
so far north.
Alaska.
I will never forget you.
I will never forget
Moosatchie and Willow,
twin newborn moose
left standing in the woods
when an ignorant tourist
shot your mom,
for bragging rights.
I fed you for two weeks
until you were able to feed
from low-hanging willow branches.
My apologies to Darwin
and to the local Forestry Management,
who said not to feed the wildlife.
Bah humbug I said,
thumb alongside my frozen nose.
And the following year
you twins were still there,
meandering happily
near my tiny cabin
hidden in the woods.
My Alaska.
I will never forget you.

one should never forget the things that teach us or show us meaning.. Alaska sounds as if it was just such a place for you.

Well done... a visit of memory as tribute to the things you loved

Thank you Toe and Captain.
I know someday I will go back for a visit. My last visit was for a year that lasted six.

Ah, Marge. Isn't it amazing the effect some places can have on us?
Thanks for spending some time with me today.

Cold in one sense but most warming to the others...  Sounds like you have many more poems/stories to share with us, no?

Kacy,

I enjoyed the poem and your title
of ~MY~ Alaska....speaks of your
love of it.

Glad you shared these experiences
though by time I finished reading
I had shivers. I hate cold and
snow. But, I am glad you do love
the place.

I'll bet you do have more to say
for I've heard it is a most
beautiful place.

Hugs and ~warm~  regards. Pat

Nice to read Alaska stories again Kacy.  I've missed them.

It is a life dream of mine to see Denali (sp?) and the Alaska that you describe so well.  What a beautiful place for solitude and nature at it's finast.  I hope I live to make this journey...and I hope it always remains your Alaska. ThisDiamond

(sigh) Oh Kacy, this is so lovely, sweet friend, I'd love to visit Alaska although I actually dream of living further south where it is warmer, hopefully near the ocean! It is becoming a desert out here! (kiss on cheek) This is wonderful, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Kacy, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Mark, I have a headful of stories and poems, only a handful written or posted.
Same as you, no doubt.

Pat, sorry for the chills. But it's warm in AK in the summer, just ask the skeeters that thrive there for three months. LOL, they are jokingly called the state bird.

Duncan, I have a few more. Holler when you're ready.

Nancy, thank you sweet lady.

Diamond, hope you do make that Denali visit.

Raph, how sweet! Thanks.

Ethel, thank you for stopping by MY Alaska.

Noah, you really should go to Alaska AND to a sunny southern beach. Colorado is really  beautiful, but the world is huge...get out there and see some of it while you can!

Thanks Paul. It's definitely worth the effort to go and visit it, and living there is often an endurance test.

Kacy,
WHAT? Not baked? Okay fine...it's probably better your way! Excellent and more.
