A stiffened flag so rigid in a freeze
where colors may not run but do not fly
until 'tis loosed by warmer, gentler breeze

And while we're heartened by the words of Keys
whose moving song oft' brings one near to sigh,
a stiffened flag is rigid in a freeze

A cruel and heartless gale will often seize
and whip the banner to a battle cry
until 'tis loosed by warmer, gentler breeze

An agitprop which spins hypocrisies
when wrapped by special interests around lies
will stiffen flags as rigid as a freeze

War whoops deafening clamorous aren't pleased
when calm debate requests to question why
until 'tis loosed by warmer, gentler breeze

It's stripes whose fluid symbolism frees
enlightened stars to loft in peaceful skies,
a stiffened flag is rigid in a freeze
until 'tis loosed by warmer, gentler breeze.

Richard

A wonderful Villanelle...the subject chilling, yet with breath of hope.  I am always appreciative of your ability and the power of your words.

I'll bow, curtsy, doff my halo, and get down on bended knee, if that is what it takes to show my appreciation of your incredible talent!

You see so clearly--and express so well--that which most of us pass without notice...enjoyed!

Richard you have an amazing talent.  Please don't ever stop writing....
ever.......
this is a great write, thank you for sharing.  The villanelle reminds me much of a terzanelle with a few twists to it.  Neither is an easy form.  You have done this so well!

Vanilla breezes to you, RS.
An excellent write, not at all stiff.

Richard, I love poems about patriotism.
By the way, whatever form
you may choose to write in is always excellently written.
I wish I knew all those forms and styles of writing poetry.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful talents......
