Upstairs   the baby awakes the morning

She has been sleeping
with the doodads that hold her blanket up
security in cold plastic
she warms it with her fingers

First a rustle of cotton stirs
and the fragrance of sun dried lifts
then settles

She is me

I hear her breath
like wings dip and rise
this piece of her still lives
upstairs

The light is on in the closet
and just a crack in the door
sends it across the braided rug
to the foot of her bed

Gone are the safety slats of crib

Her walls are scribbled crayon
and colors mark her territory
bold fences and many circles
try to keep her safe
if I die before I wake

The dust balls scurry into the dawn
frizzled and alive with light driven air
for a minute they pose
before any movement sends them back
to the hardwood floor under the bed

Soon the curled fingers of innocence
will be touched by sun coming through
a small pinprick in the shade

and the baby will awake the morning

She is me
I hear her breath
like wings dip and rise
this piece of her still lives
upstairs

Start the novel, Martie.
For this is how Anne Rice got
started...

Here's the pen.

I'll pass the paper.

Martie, Martie, Martie ...

my my my...what a muse the morning has always been in your pen...
(recalling "silk lined")(among many others)
you capture these "sun dried" moments like few can.

and this verse.....

She is me

I hear her breath
like wings dip and rise
this piece of her still lives
upstairs

my my my ............. (IWIHWT)

just one line ... one rhyme ... one metered verse ...
if only I could inspire in you ... promised poetic coerce.

Martie, I enjoyed the  picture you painted of Samantha and yourself in this lovely piece.   *hugs*

the earth will turn on as before,
the gulls, still race along the shore,
the morning star, still kiss the dawn

You are one who is so in touch with her own child-like wonder. I love to see the world through your eyes--and your pen.

If I could describe life as you do....I would
be all that I ever have dreamed of being
and more...

Yes,  you should write about this...even if
only a book for your children and grands..

This is awesome work  Martie dearest...

Martie - a wonderful poem - thanks for taking us to one of those places where your spirit wafts sweet memories over us and as we see through your eyes and words we touch a part of us that wants to wake up the morning - just great - Paul
