Sighed wee elf, I'm feeling blue,
There is not a thing to do,
But work, work, work, then work some more,
My poor wee life is just a bore,
Tap, tap, tap, with wee elf hammer,
Amid the toy shop's constant clamor,
Dolls and trains; a small red wagon,
Tap, tap, tap, wee elf was draggin',
On his shirt front drops of wet,
From wee wee drops of wee elf sweat,
I'm hot and tired, my wee feet ache,
How much more can a wee elf take?
I need a break, to get away,
'Cause we wee elves, need time to play,
I'll talk to the man himself,
That's what I'll do said wee-est elf,
Just then Santa walked in the door,
And walked across the toy shop floor,
Over to the elf so small,
He was hardly there at all,
Santa asked, wee elf are you
Feeling sick, you look so blue,
I'm in the dumps, wee elf replied,
Here at the Pole, cooped up inside.
I guess I'm not like other elves,
Who work, work, work, fill toy shop shelves,
Who all the while are hap, hap, happy,
If you ask me, they're kind of sappy,
I guess that I am just a freak,
Sobbed wee-est elf, a wee elf geek.
Come to me my wee wee friend,
All this sadness you must end,
I have a story that you must hear,
As Santa dried a wee elf tear.
I guess you're old enough to know,
Just who you are, why you don't grow,
I found you many years ago,
Left all alone, out in the snow,
Just before a Christmas dawn,
No one around, your parents gone,
Both had been captured by an evil wizard,
Amid the snows of a Christmas blizzard,
I brought you home aboard my sleigh,
Hoping that you'd ever stay,
But now you know, and you must choose,
To stay with us, or have us lose,
A wee dear friend we've grown to love,
As precious as the stars above.
Your father was a leprachaun,
From the Emerald Isles, from where he'd gone,
To see the world aboard a ship,
Across the ocean on a trip,
To Finland's fiords from his land of green,
Where he fell in love with a fairy queen,
They got married and had a son,
That's all I know, my story done.
I guess you'll have to change your name,
As things will never be the same,
Please forgive me before you go,
I should have told you long ago,
Santa Claus, you've said enough,
I don't want to sound too gruff,
But us elves must never shirk,
We've toys to make, must work, work, work,
Took his wee hammer from off the toy shelf,
Said I've work to do, I am wee elf.

Tim,
this was delightfu! - from the doldrums to the finding of himself it was magical.

Tim,

How precious. I can see this made into book, along with lots of illustrations.  Enjoyed greatly.

Warm regards, Pat

Well now, isn't my family going to love hearing this one Christmas Eve?  First one I have printed off for someone to read Tim, and just a fantastic little story it is.  I too can see this with colorful illustrations by James Cristensen.
