This mirror before me
which returns, without judgment,
the image of who I am....Not who
I was or might be, but simply the
shell of who I am..

I stand, reaching out...lightly touching the
face that looks into my eyes....sensing
all of the blemishes of age, the wrinkles
of years of smiles, frowns....the spots
that seemed to have not been there
yesterday...

Wiping the fog away, nothing has
changed....All seems the same in spite of
a dab of brush here and there....the face
now shaven and the gray stubble gone
till yet again the sun rises and wrinkles
return to the mirror...only this time...
In yawn...a slight blurring of the eyes
taking the clearness away...

Each day new, each rise of the sun bringing
one more line, one more morning of what
has been given to me, to each of us as
we age, slowly at first....and rushing in the
end...toward a destination yet to be seen.

If but once I could open the cover to the
Book of Fate and read my destiny....If
then, could I rest....accept my destiny as
being fulfilled....or would I mourn the
sadness of failing, of faltering... as a
coin twirled, wobbles and wobbles...

Will it be heads, or tails?  Which did
I choose?

Magnus - I believed you picked the most positive side whether heads or tails...

Well written and enjoyed. If your poetry is a clue, than you have nothing to worry about. Nobody could write with the depth of character you do and not possess it.

Warmest regards, Pat

I agree with everyone ahead of me Barry.
You most certainly appear to have made the right choices.
Good write!

Deeply moving words Magnus. I was rendered speechless and deep in thought of own choices and where they will lead.

With a little luck and a prayer, perhaps we experience a bit of each..and know that we lived as life was meant to be--enjoyed!

I think about this very thing many times, too many I guess. You wrote it well.

Barry, you wrote so well of a subject I'm sure all of us have thought about at some time or another. Time will only tell......

Barry, I think we all feel this way. Since I retired, I've spent a lot of time look and asking and pondering.

Perhaps many of us can walk this path together.

Ah, of course, it is in the poem itself...

you chose heads.

As they say, "You're not getting older! You're getting better!"

This poem is a keeper, and if I ever begin to show signs of aging....Whoops! My nose just grew a foot and broke the mirror that I was so lovingly gazing into! LOL

Absolutely superb poem with incredible depth. Words that so many of us who reach the milestone of thirty---okay, 40!--or more!--have contemplated!

~ Barry, you're like fine wine that gets better with time!

~ warm hugs, you gorgeous hunk of manliness!

P.S. (Note, that is P.S., not B.S.! hehe) You truly are a gifted POET!

I enjoyed the depth in this piece, Barry.  Life really does seem to be in a rush, but I'm sure, like myself, you chose heads.

The stars will shine when I am gone,
the earth will turn on as before,
the gulls, still race along the shore,
the morning star, still kiss the dawn
