Life, that elixir of the soul that carries one
into the new morn.  That bears the trumpet as
a tune is sounded.  A whisper’s breath upon
the leaves of one’s mind..

Give to me that fount where waters flow into
the past of one’s age.  And give again the step
of spring and sprightly, the voice of clear,
without the rasp of age.

Take from my skin this river of wrinkling
that flows endlessly into the darkness of
the sleeve as well as the skin that no longer
hugs the bone, shows the muscle of youth
and vitality...let me breath...

Ah, but time does spare no quarter of those
who scan the mirror, asking who might be
most fair of all?  Knowing that the answer
lies a stone’s throw away across the
muddied waters of then, leaving a breath of
here behind..

If my days were numbered that I might know
when to share my last sight, the last breath of
breathe....the last gasp...Let them be so numbered
that I might reach out and touch the face of he
who gave me this life....and know there is and
ever shall be never ending life....as my sight
darkens and my eyes close to the smile of
that which I have had....that which I am...
That they might drink of the fount as well.

Barry, a most contemplative and melifluous read on a topic that has interweaved my thoughts throughout most of my life.  Rest assured that your poetic voice has no rasp...
