This time last year
I hid myself behind the walls
of forced self sufficiency
and would allow no one to view
the healing process.
I was mended;
yet the cracks
from my existence still
threatened to rise up
and overwhelm me

This time last year
I promised myself -
Next year will be different,
no more will I dwell
behind the walls of depression;
for life is too short
to curtail it with drugs
alcohol or other forms
of destructive behaviour

This time last year
I began to tear down
the shelter of my protective walls
that had enclosed me in
a womblike, tomblike
existence and I began to laugh.
At first at silly things
but as my confidence grew
and my faith blossomed,
my courage to try was renewed

This time last year
I willed to try - no matter what the cost
I decided to step out
and rise or fall by those steps
but also to not give up, give in
or surrender to the faltering of them.

I determined not to allow
the darknss to consume me
or even nibble at the edges of me.

This time last year
I wrestled the darkness and won.
I accepted myself
with all my flaws and failings
but also with all my redeeming qualities
and my strengths.
And I have discovered resilience
I did not know I had

This time last year
I resolved to live.
And this time next year
I resolve to pursue my dreams.
Perhaps I will fail but at least I will have tried.
- By this time next year.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

I loved the overall scheme. Overcoming one's drawbacks, flaws, and fears to pursue the life they deserve. Wonderful, inspirational piece.

Yes, Kethry, and time is the key to it all. I love this poem. You've expressed a healing process and subsequent renewel perfectly. May we all be as successful as depicted in your poem. So insightful and hope- filled for those who have not reached this plateau...

Hugs and warm regards, Pat

Ironically enough kethry I've been on this same path, I've won some battles and lost some. But these words inspire me to try harder this year. Thanks

An excellent write and VERY inspirational.  Thanks!

Keth, my friend, you did a marvellous job already climbing out of the dark and I saw your smile in September and I loved it.

Special hug to you dear

Not only did you resolve to do, Kethry...you dood it!!

Anyone can make plans or resolutions...keeping them is the kicker. From what I see from here - and from standing in front of you - is worthy of loud applause.
