Mister Samuel T
Lived frugally
Off saved annuity
Believed in reality
And the brutality
Of the streets and T.V.
And walked cautiously
Dressed sensibly
Was robbed repeatedly
And murdered finally
Buried quietly
With no one to see
Him reach eternity
Too quickly

Gloom

Professor, I had an increasingly sinking feeling as your words drew me down the page to the poor unfortunate man's untimely demise at the end of the poem. Very effective, yet sad and disturbing social commentary.

Poetry can't always be butterflies and angels, sometimes it has to touch the "real" of life.  Good write, sir!

The stars will shine when I am gone,
the earth will turn on as before,
the gulls, still race along the shore,
the morning star, still kiss the dawn
