I watched one bend and break,
body forsaking
until all that remained
was a room filled
with his last gasp
and the stench
of death's whore;
I still wait to cry,
endlessly reaching
into that empty place
where he once was

and now, the other

You ask me to watch again,
this time
as a mind unbends
choking
on yesterday's confusion,
lost in today

and in the unraveling,
smile, repeat the cliché
('he lived a good life after all')
follow the bouncing ball
while himself
is lost
in all he ever was

I look into an angry sky,
my sky, Your sky,
for something
and nothing is there;
I need to understand
I need to cry
but most of all
right now
I need to be angry,
I am

selfish? probably
sorry for myself? of course
indignant? yes

but You see,
they were, and are
two of the best parts
of me--
good, honest men
who did it all
the way it should be done,
sentenced to die
in ways
even the evil among us
should not suffer

I'm no one's little girl anymore,
that I can accept,
but I cannot accept
or understand
the indignity, the pain--
maybe someday,
but not today,
today I must watch
as the other
walks slowly away

The clock ticks on we all. Count the good times and remember those who suffer from alzheimers may in fact not suffer as much as those witnesses to their confusion. You're probably someone's little girl.

This was very intense.  Drew me in, even when I resisted.  Like the emotional rawness.

and so many will call those who seek the fount of youth or an elixer of life fools; even in our rest our fate is cruel.

The reaper comes,  sows the wheat and lets
the chaff fly....without ever knowing a
name....  No,  it never is fair...

This is an awesome poem...one that has a
great deal of depth within the words of it.
Most powerful....with a very strong title
that drags one in...ever so quickly..
