Tombstones
(from Boyhood Tales)

We sat on tombstones, the group of us,
gathered around the grave of a child,
saying we'd come to play.

We'd bring Teddy Bears, dolls, toys,
the teenager in us remembering early years,
things we cherished then...now.

We'd talk with the child,
using whatever name was etched in stone;
sometimes we'd lay on the grave,
letting heart-heat warm the ground, soul touch soul.

We'd play for a while,  pray... move on.

When Bailey broke his arm
we dragged him to several graves,
joked about how he did it,
wrote our names all over his cast...
did the same for the kids.

Prayed a little... moved on.

When Mike was hit by a car... and died,
we sat on his tombstone,
lay all over his grave, and cried,
gave him our Teddy Bears, dolls, toys,
the teenager in us, aging.

We prayed a lot, for a long time... moved on.

We've never been back.

Wonderful! It is so true that grieving is a word we know is sad when we are young, but not quite real to us until we must mourn a person whose life we shared.  You said it so well.
