~clouds of Ice~

Clouds of ice hang in the sky
pouting sullen winter chill
frigid, blue-grey, bleak
their bitterness, raw and flinty
a chilling scowl
at the naked trees below

dormant yellowed grasses
shiver in the wind
begging to be insulated
warmed with a fresh coat of snow

in this twilight of autumn
before winter breathes her frigid breath
pretty snowflakes have yet to dance
but the festival of leaves has disappeared

leaving only
the stark silhouette of branches
against November's icy sky
~

Hello Lyra

As you probably know it doesn't snow where I live, here in Melbourne, only way up in the mountains which are far from where I live on the coast.  Thank you for giving me such a fabulous insight to what it is like.  The picture complimented your words so beautifully.

Take care

Thanks so much for your reply, Sue...
It snows a lot here on the western side of Michigan because we get the lake effect snow from Lake Michigan...
But it hasn't snowed yet this year...
In November, we tend to have very grey skies, which look like ice... but it doesn't usually start snowing until the beginning of December...  sometimes in very late November around Thanksgiving...

I'm not looking forward to the sky you perfectly describe, Lyra.  We're still getting hours of bright, almost warm sunshine nearly everyday.  This morning when I was walking the dog, there were so many leaves falling off the trees, it sounded like it was raining.

Lyra, this is just stunning! As much as I dislike the cold and snow and ice, your words make it sound so enticing. Beautiful, beautiful poem and the picture is fantastic.

November is commonly perceived as one of the two dreariest months of the year--February, being the other--at least in this part of the world.

Your poem and photo illustrate the beauty of this month and that we should all embrace it and go out and enjoy the invigorating weather and behold the purity of its starkness.

~ This is one of the loveliest poems that I have ever read on the month of November. It is a keepsake poem for me. Thank you!

Very pretty work here, Lyra. I'm so glad the trees here retain their leaves during the winter.  Unfortunately, being so far south I miss the autumn colors.  Warm hugs, my friend.

Lyra, you know how I love the sand on the
beaches near the water, but you painted
this so well with your words and picture that
it sounded very inviting.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful picture and poem.

Lyra

You made me shiver with cold from your vivid description.  You paint with words.  It was 85 degrees here in Southern California today.  November is my favorite time here, as the Santa Ana winds blow the warm air from the desert some days, and clean the sky of every trace of smog.

Lyra,  you have painted the scene very well,
also set the mood in place...looking up into
a somber gray sky.....wishing ..  as you
are... for that warming blanket of white
finery to fall gently to earth....

(sigh) Oh Lyra, you've painted the picture so beautifully, sweet friend, it is a time of nothingness and tranquility yet only lasts for a little bit and before you know it the snowflakes dance and then spring rushes back in! (kiss on cheek) God Bless You, sweet friend, this is very wonderfully said, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Lyra, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Duncan... thank you for your reply,
This has been such a strange year for weather.
I didn't think the leaves would ever turn color, but when they did... they did a magnificent job...
and now that they are gone, the winds of winter are starting slowly to make their way in... but its only been these last couple of days that the sky has truly looked like November...

We have Pin Oaks here in Michigan and their leaves turn brown but stay on the trees until March...  A couple of weeks after they fall off, the new growth starts greening up.

but I have always thought that the wintery skies here are particularly lovely
