He walks along the public road
in his brass-buttoned coat.
Pulling fast against the chill
of winter's white and lonely stare.

Past the smell of smoke and warmth,
the sun a coin below his hat.
That light causes his eyes to close.
He averts them to the curb.

A chair leg smashed among strewn bricks.
Standing pools of ice reflect
storefront shelled to some collapse,
leaning in the public road.

Past the silent sustained dust,
past the smell of smoke and warmth.
Walking up that public road,
to the low tanks travelling home.

your pen paints a vivid picture. I love this.

Love is patient, indeed. It endures the distance when it seems we cannot endure it ourselves.

Wow indeed!

Michael,

Every line of this poem is a photo!
You did not waste one word.

And every line I walked right along side him, shivering, and I saw:

      ~the silent sustained dust~

I enjoyed this a great deal and re-read it several times.

Thank You,
Pat
