Pix of my brother

Snapshots

We lived there
in a two-story house
on a quiet Salem street.

A big yard
with a log-cabin playhouse
back, in the corner, by Mill Creek.

Ducks swam
fish swum,
we felt smart, sometimes dumb.

Geronimo!
off the cabin roof,
what a spoof.

A white duck pet
to save his life
kept within, ‘til he got out.

Fishing
from the bank
until that day, you asked Mom how to cast.

She said,
“Bring it behind you,
then, throw it out there.”

You did.

Snapshots II

A baseball bat
thrown in the air
A hollered scream
like as you’d care

Atop my head
a hefty blow
It felt as if
my brain would go

We all saw “Them”
that very year
It capped off well
an ardent fear

You drew and wrote
your Donald tales
And sent them off
to Disney’s mail

He wrote to you
“A job well done,
But your own critters
must be won."

A boy whose skills
in school had want
You rattled off
a glorious jaunt

A comic book
your own design
If only they’d known,
twas such a crime!

In anger’s fit
you ripped to shreds
Record of
your awesome skill

And now you sit
by window’s sill
Awaiting time
with hours to kill

Growing far
so far from me
In whom you are
and were to be.

Vas,

This is so well written and enjoyed, right up to the end when  sorrow speaks. Your ability to cause emotions to swing from high to pit of the stomach low, in one poem, is incredible.

Thank you so much,
God Bless,
Pat

There are great, joyful memories, and some painful ones...just as any siblings' pasts. The fishing scene was some of each, for the pole he was using was my mother's, I believe, and when he tossed it, he didn't hold on to the handle. Down, on the bottom of Mill Creek, a rod, a reel and my bother's zeal. And in my memory, and echo of my mother's spitting and spouting, and unltimately laughing at his perception of her words.

My folks did a lot of head-shaking while we were growing up.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.
