As I packed my
little ballet case
with my favourite
doll, new Davey Crockett
underwear,
and a few chocolate chip
cookies for my
long journey,
she laughed.
Trudging down our
driveway, the gravel
crunching underneath
my bright red running shoes,
the laces dragging because
she always tied them
for me,
I told her that I
was never coming home.
She laughed.
Determined head down,
eyes brimming with tears,
not of sadness, but rather
stubborn anger,
my short, six year old
legs hesitated a few
houses from home.
I looked back,
my Kool-Aid stained lips
in a Shirley Temple pout.
She laughed.
I stomped my foot
in frustration.
"Come home Chrissy,
you'll get lost"
I heard her shout.
With thoughts of
lions, and tigers
and bears,
there ended my
one and only
runaway attempt.
When I sheepishly
joined her on
the front steps,
she held me
to her and
tickled me.
Together -
We Laughed.

How I miss my big sister -
I love you Enchantress!!

I wish to become a great poet some day, but it will only come in time. Til then, I shall write my poems, and wait.

Hi Chris - Isn't it amazing how the grass always seems greener and our need to run is so overwhelming. Then realization sets in and we can't get home fast enough.

Thank you for allowing me into a small part of your life.

Hope all is well, Huggles, Marti

LOL, this is priceless. I liked the ending of your runaway story much better than my own; I ran away when I was five, and stayed away for three days. I took my four year old sister with me, while my older sister waved goodbye as mom slammed the door behind me.
I loved the tenderness and love that flowed from your story, and the picture is great!

Chris, I had a similar moment around age 4. My Mom told me I got as far as the outside steps in my little bare feet and nightgown, and decided it was too cold and I would run away another time.
This was done with great finesse, and crystal clear images.

Chris, this is so cute. Thank you for sharing this sweet memory with us and thanks to you, Nancy, for sharing the cute picture of you two.
I was going to run away on my bicycle once when I was about five or six. I packed my little bag and was going to my Grandmother's house. By the way, she lived right around the corner from us. HaHa!! That was the one and only time I ever was going to "run away from home", too.

Ethel - lol....that's where I was headed also - to my grandmother's!! I mean, at that age...where else would I go? Thankyou.

Gentle Spirit - sweet poetess, thankyou for reading and commenting. Yes, we are friends as well as sisters - that's important.

I'm so glad I found this...
I, too, have a run away story,
but unlike you, I did not have a big
sister to bring me home...

just a smart mom.

Perhaps, like yours, it will evolve into a telling...

who knows...you rippled the memories with this...
