Misty morning
New Orleans.

Sidewalk, ramble worn smooth,
cracked through bloodshot eyes, stoned puddles,
streetlights sketch black and white
rainbows through the fog.

Steps into blocks, turn
till I am finally home,
too chilled for October.

What is this?
A fire already
seduces from hearth,
‘Come rest, come warm’.
How can that be,
has someone visited?
No, see…
only figments
warm echo of imagination
still hang from the night.

Was it just then,
I held her?

Misty mornings
still postcards,
signed with love.

Is that a beignet in your pocket or are you just really glad to see me?

New Orleans is a haunting city--and you captured her well...she is the quintessence of the present longing for the past. A very nice metaphor for your own longing here.

And if that was unintentional? fake it!

laughing. Glad to have you back home Dunc.

Thanks for the postcard. I collect 'em yanno.

an interesting departure from the norm for you D - i think i like it... as much for the different approach as the execution. the metaphor comes through clearly... them home fires and such. peace m'man.

Sounds familiar…sounds like a postcard I once sent… the French Quarter on a misty moring. I remember the scene…I remember the time….familiar place…love in it’s prime.

Stretch out by candlelight, sip a tall R&C,
rub the dog's belly, and be glad for what you had.
Ya, right. Misty hugs to ya.

It's been years since I visited New Orleans, but this poem still sounds like I remember it. I really like New Orleans, but haven't been there since I went to visit my brother and his family when they lived in Donaldsonville, I think was the name of the little town. It was near Baton Rouge.
He is up in Missouri, near St. Louis, now.

only you could distill a post card

Love the imagery in this...and the subtle haunted ache to it...written so it wraps around the reader like a fog of longing.
very cool write Dunc...i see the blue flame glowing in the fog....
better be careful...someone might mistake ya for a moth

No one has ever shown me how to see the world the way I see it now ...
and I never saw blue like that before.

I was interrupted last night
when I first read this,
but the haunting remained,

and I see Serenity has answered this in her
complimentary way...

I once wrote of N'Orleans...
and she gifted me with a similar comment...

and that, Sir
is a good thing.

impressive.  very.

i have this odd love for new orleans, despite the fact that i've never been.

this was a very strongly written piece.  so beautiful.

i must admit i wasn't taken that much by the last line, but the rest of it really captured me.

Great poem... Thank you for sharing.

I wish to become a great poet some day, but it will only come in time. Til then, I shall write my poems, and wait.

You painted a soulful picture here, Duncan...
I can almost hear the blues music playing in the background...
I loved the imagery
~ lots of soulful hugs
