Life's a bare canvas, it's theme love.

The artist's always encouraged to be true.

Lodged between eye and hand, ear and voice
is experience and psyche. Successful passage
for art's freedom requires open minds,
calm composure.

My last lover heard cubes and swirls,
painted by moonlight always destroying
by dawn, before completion,

untrusting of her eye, steadiness of
hand, perfection of finished statement,
perhaps criticism of it.

She doubtless moves on possibly satisfied.

I hear tornados, watch hurricanes
part noctilucent clouds where
as a trembling sinner am frozen
in the lightning eyes of God and
await the thunder of His reaching hand.

I face winter and need time between works.

My stomach no longer winches like the taut
yank of a lawnmower at sightings of beige
4 Runners, nor do quick invisible hands
shortstop breath as I walk past sushi bars,
lips drawn no thinner, eyes not dive
to the sidewalks.

I can see ads for high count sheets,
view surrealistic paintings,

lately the notion of dancing close tenders
a subtle, slender advance against barely
perceptible recessions as waves return
moisture to desiccated shores.

I may someday light another candle.

Don't know what will happen in the slim
chance I hear Gillian Welch's music

or meet another woman with her name.

Somedays, it seems like everything I read, I relate to as I did this.  Damn.

"or meet another woman with her name."

Very moving write Mr. Wells...
Perhaps it is only the ending of a beginning?
Well done!

Wow!!! Oh Richard, I too was curious of some of the allusions you used in this poem and had to look them up and only made me even more impressed with this excellent poignant expression of calling it quits! (big hugggssssss) This is remarkable, sweet friend, your versatile talent is always a delight to read, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Richard, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

"dancing close tenders"--I love this phrase, so soft somehow--you've said this as beautifully and as honestly as it could be said.

(may light another candle?)

me thinks you answered your own question with these lines:

Life's a bare canvas, it's theme love.

The artist's always encouraged to be true.

I couldnt possibly say it any better than the artist who penned it.

No one has ever shown me how to see the world the way I see it now ...
and I never saw blue like that before.

So many canvasses, so little time.
But artists don't always tell the bareboned truth. Sometimes fantasy takes over the brushstroke.

You spoke so gracefully of the waning light of that candle.......

Totally exquisite...so many lines gripping and superb. This is a keeper, may I?

I can't get over how many unique and powerful lines, there are too many to say "this is my favorite" it would look silly, for how can a favorite be twenty or so in number

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

Richard

You light a candle when you write, the kind you can't blow out.

"Life's a bare canvas, it's theme  love."  is a poem all by itself!

And, so many more included in the lines of this poem. I'd just like to say I hope we all, who've felt this way, may someday find the courage and fortitude to:

     "light another candle"

Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us.

Warm Regards,
Pat
