One Came Home for Christmas
~~~
An eerie silence gripped the hour
no slightest sound was heard
So many thousands
crammed the boats
and nary a one was coward
They waited ... etched
in silence
their thoughts
were never shared
Then a crackle o'er the wireless
and a thousand engines roared
~
The landing craft were under way
the waves
were pounding hard
the foam
sprayed o'er the gunnel
engulfed them
like a shard
The air
soon filled
with mortar blasts
as ears
near burst their seams
" Ready Now "
was shouted loud
a blast was mixed with screams
~
The sea foam held a reddish tinge
an odor
bit the air
Some screamed out their battle cry
while others
just a prayer
The first few ripped to pieces
one step
was all they took
The rest
climbed over what was left
without a second look
~
Five young friends with right hands raised
were going to save the world
Two died
before they left the boat
One
drown in the water
One
listed ... "Missing in Action"
The last
stepped on a land mine
Several months ...
to recover from the loss of his leg
~
but he made it home for Christmas
~
Lest we forget ...
~~~

Thank you, Rex.  I believe this day, as any other and perhaps more so, should be remembered for those who served our Country, and for those who never made it home for Christmas.  I hope all of those who have a poetic flair such as you, will take a moment, and leave it here, for us to share, hand in hand, ever widening the circle.

You're right Karilea ... a moment in mind once or twice a year for those who gave us a most precious gift is certainly not a burden to those who care to remember

Very powerful write, Rex...not many came back for Christmas from Dieppe...A bittersweet battle for Canadians...first major involvement and yet set up for slaughter...our troops showed their metal..but paid dearly...

Rex darling boy, oh how I’ve missed your amazing ability to write, and when you write like this Oh wow. What do I say in response to this, nothing for you leave me speechless with envy, blown away by the power and the majesty of your words. Now tell me that you doubt your skill as a writer, now tell me that this is simply something you jotted down in a quiet moment. You cannot expect me to believe that this gem of wonder was not crafted carefully, the words placed within it carefully and precisely. This is incredible writing, and I love it utterly, it isn’t beautiful, except in its construction, it is sadness and pain written with the pen of a craftsman. Excellent language usage, the flow utterly perfect and YOU know that I love it.

Absolutely wonderful darling heart

Love and warm stuff
As always
Mushy

Breathe through the heat of our desire
Thy coolness and they balm
Let sense be dumb let flesh retire
Speak through the earthquake wind and fire

Great tribute, Rex. We should never forget the tremendous sacrifices made by our veterans. If not for them, we wouldn't be here.

Rex, as Denise said, "if not for them we wouldn't be here" and you captured their plight quite well. A wonderful poet you are. Such talent. A pleasure to read you.

Rex, I don't think I've ever read you before. This was a very touching poem. Very well written with a lot of feeling and emotion coming forth. Thank you for reminding us to be thankful for our veterans.
