"An Irishman is never drunk as long as he can hold on to one blade of grass and not fall off the earth"
                       - Irish saying
.
.
.
Through the vale of tears
I've finally accepted,

hiding in plain sight even
enjoying the white noise
of crowds in passing,

amid the alien corn on
the first day of an
Indian Summer,

the moonlight I thought
gone found my shadow.

Young eyes as intense
as mine ensnared me.

Electra why'd you
recognize my lonliness
and decide to do
something about it?

John Wesley Hardin
gunslinger undoer of
40 lives vowed vengence
on vigilantes when grass
was found in the toes of
his hung brother proving
a tortured death at the
end of a rope purposely
cut too long.

I froze physically in your
light. Internally I felt I'd
been caught, a little boy at
the end of a favorite uncle's
chase, adolescent girl peeking
through the blanket to
watch/not watch the scary part
of the movie.

I'd been trying to clutch
a single blade of grass
and leave this earth.

I was 26 years, 6 weeks
the day you were born.

You say you want to see me.
What are you thinking?
What's to become of me?

we'll see,
we'll see.

So many things going on in here, some I think understand, some I am guessing at. But your ending strikes like  lightning, as reflected in a dusty mirror.

Richard, I love all your work, but I do believe I like this one best of all.
I can read some things between the lines, but others I'm pondering in my mind, too.
I really like the Irish saying, too...but that could be because I am about half Irish and I understand it.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful work with us, Richard.

Yesterday was sunny and warm. Lured out for the day I ended up in a tavern. Across from me was a very pretty lass. I smiled, she smiled and said I looked lonely. This led to a conversation in which I, as is my habit, told her of some of my misfortunes. While one would not find this a way to win friends and influence people I figure if someone hangs around past my past then it can only get better from there. She came up with the saying which starts this poem minus the Irish drunk part, as a sort of laud towards my standing up to my woes. I wanted to give proper place to the quote and it turned out to be this saying (My mother's an O'Leary). The girl is less than half my age and seemed quite smitten by me who has about given up on love. She says she wants to see me again. I'm not exactly in a trusting mood but will call her (I did last night, it really is her number). The allusions are "vale of tears", "white noise", "amid the alien corn" and Electra (freudian for a daughter's fixation on her father). The illusion may be this whole notion of hers (and slowly mine). The Hardin tale I saw on a documentary this morning and seemed to fit in to this write.

Well...it is a good write for sure, but somehow its contents seem troublesome.
Reminds me of Lolita somehow, best rub your eyes

In the 60's people did drugs to make the world weird.
Now the world is weird and they take Prozac to make it better.

Thanks for your notice folks......Ah Sharon, bless you always worrying about me. Sure this will end badly (if it even starts) but think of the fuel for future writes.

BRAVO!!! Oh Richard, this is excellent, sweet friend, this is a wonderful perspective on this common saying, I too love to use sayings and analyze them as we can learn from so many! (sigh) This is marvelous, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Richard, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Excellent expression, Richard! And I finally read between the lines and got something right as your explanation confirmed! Sometimes I amaze myself! Again, great piece of writing!

And you do write pretty darn good fueled with passion or anger Okay - won't worry but instead wait for all these poems.
