thesaurus poet

you abuse the English language
demean the art of words
with your addiction
to that
thesaurus
little book for those of
little brain
replacing “abusive” with
“opprobrious”
“careful” with
“punctilious”
“gloomy” with
“saturnine”
turning a poem into a
complex formula
a language in need of
translation
tell me you’re an “amateur”
not a “dilettante”
show me your “logic”
not your “ratiocination”
I want soft words with
meaning
feeling with fluid foundation
not
cement ramblings
give me content without
“verbosity” “phraseology”
something supple yet simple
it is then “poetry”
not “plagiaristic pretentiousness”

Quite a rant. Plath used a thesaurus extensively, didn't seem to hurt her (I don't think). Rage against pretension I understand.

I had to smile at this. I've read a few poems that do seem to fall off the pages of a Roget. But I also find a thesaurus to be quite useful, as it can expand one's vocabulary and trigger many new images, and sometimes even inspires a creative writing that might not have been forthcoming were it not for a 'trigger' word.
But you are right, there is no substitute for the words that flow straight from the heart.

Lisa, I agree that a poem is much more effective to the reader if the poet writes something straight from the heart. But, I believe that words are beautiful and some of the talented writers here certainly do have a way with words.
I enjoyed the way that you got your point across so effectively. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings.

Thanks for your comments...guys...I appreciate all of em! Midnitesun--oh yeah, don't get me wrong--sometimes a thesaurus can save you when u get in a bind about what word to use. This poem isn't about people who just look to a thesaurus on occasion--this is about the people who would have a massive panic attack if they were told to write a poem freeverse, no thesaurus aloud! And for those that think for a poem to be good, it needs big, complex words. SO not the case!!

I've always believed that simplicity of expression doesn't necessarily mean simplicity of thought. I liked your little poem.

(sigh) I too believe it is a wonderful thing to expand ones vocabulary and juggle around with new words, though at the same time when you use a more complex word make sure it doesn't interrupt the conduit of ones thoughts and that when read around the word even if you don't understand it you know what is being said! (big hugggssssss) This is excellent, sweet friend, very wise indeed, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Lisa, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!
