She lingers in the spaces between speech. Her mouth, a whisper, stares across this reach. Her hunger hits the pillows, bounces back. I press the phone in closer to our lack. Her voice is highway's wait for winter rain. My voice meets her tempo and refrain. We linger for the future, its wet smoke. Our breath as still as frozen water and the dam it broke. |
