This is a re-post from Forum #16 but I think an important one for you to share with your children.

This is a true story about two sisters I met three years ago) on Halloween. These two girls are from a single Dad family, and are now still members of my Big Sisters group. One girl was in a wheelchair as she had suffered a spinal cord injury I was to find out later. She and her sister were dressed in the prettiest fairy costumes I think I have ever seen. Her sister was pushing her to get her trick or treats, along with her Father accompanying them.

I was shocked to find out and see how badly the little girl in the wheelchair had been badly burned by a roman candle firecracker five years prior that apparently a young boy shot off in the schoolyard. It had gotten stuck in her long hair, and resulted in blinding her one eye and causing severe burn damage to her face and head. She just had another operation so it has been five years of reconstructive surgeries so far (how would that traumatize a child?), but she is starting to look pretty darn cute again.

I had wanted to post this as a warning for a long time, but coudn't get the story to 'work' nicely into a proper poem, so bear with me on this, as it was really important to me to get this message across, which is,

Please supervise your children
when there are fireworks around.

~*~ A True Story of Two Halloween Fairies ~*~

There was a little fairy on Halloween night,
who taught me a life lesson I won’t soon to forget.
I asked her would she like a trick or treat,
She said, "A treat please is what I’d like to get."

"You see that’s my sister in the wheelchair down there;
she got a trick before that wasn't very kind.
May I please have two treats, one for her, one for me?
See, she can't climb your stairs, do you mind?

See, one Halloween we were on your street,
going door to door, and walked by the school.
We stopped to watch kids shooting off fireworks,
and a silly boy shot one at my sister, the fool!

That's my Dad down there, he comes with us now,
making sure that we'll both be alright,
see there's kids shooting off more fireworks,
and we don't want another 'trick' tonight.

My sister lost her sight that Halloween night,
so I collect the treats for her goodie bag too.
See lady, she’s scared, but wants to come with me,
it takes courage to walk this street, but we do.

You gives out full size chocolate bars
and we like to come to your door on Halloween,
so we decided to come 'cause it is dark,
and then my sister's face cannot be seen.

She doesn’t like anyone to see her face,
as they make such fun of her at school.
Dad says I shouldn’t be angry with that boy,
but what was he thinking, that fool?"

With tears in my eyes I walked down the stairs,
and filled that child's bag up to the top.
Her Dad smiled, took my hand and thanked me,
I went inside crying, and just couldn’t stop.

I'll always remember that small child's smile,
as I hugged and wished her Happy Halloween,
her tiny face had been so badly burned,
but I saw the brightest smile I've ever seen.

When I think life has dealt me a share of tricks,
I'll always remember that small sweet angel's smile,
and turn all of the tricks thrown at me into a treat,
and be thankful in the daylight I can smile!

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Sharon, now I am flooding in tears reading this in two different ways. First, it saddened me to hear of the tragedy the young girl experienced with the firecracker accident and my heart goes out to her and all the children whose parents have to watch over the candy they get to make sure they're safe, but it also made me cry because of the generousity and love the other girl showed for the girl who was hurt and how that smile still shows on that other girls face as their love shines! (BIG HUGGGSSSSSSS) God Bless You, sweet friend, and God Bless Tara and Leah, this is a beautiful poem, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Sharon, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Sharon, this is an amazing tale of two little fairies, Tara and Leah.

It is such a cruel and scary world but this  sure brightened my heart because of your love and caring for them.

Hugs to you all, Marti

Some lessons are so hard to tell...and they are the ones that mean so much.  Thank you for reposting this, for the thoughtfulness of the loving sister.

Sharon, you should put a tissue alert in the title! It's not seemly for a grownup to use her sleeve! Touching and tender!

This just goes to show that no matter how sorry we feel for ourselves... there is always someone who is worse off...

So very sad, this is... that poor little girl and what a beautiful poem, Sharon

Your comments have absolutely made me cry now.  Actually this little gal is doing fairly well, she has an eye now (looks real) and they figure one more and that is the best they are able to do.  It is amazing though, she grows her own skin for the surgery, but I won't go into to it in case some have touchy stomachs.  I showed their Dad your comments last year and I will show them to him again this year, and Noah (not to single you out) but honey, you have a heart of the purest gold and I only hope that wonderful things always come your way.  Thank you one and all for your comments.

Now how am I supposed to type when I'm bawling my eyes out? This is truly a wonderful write! And your right, the message needs to get out there. All kids should be supervised on Halloween and ALWAYS. It is an unfortunate fact that the world we live in now is not as safe as it once was. Thanks so much for sharing this and kiss those little girls for me when they come knocking tonight.

Sharon, you wrote this with so much compassion, wisdom, love--and eloquence.

It breaks my heart to see anyone suffer, especially children. These "Two Halloween Fairies" had come to the right house--for they had come to a magical kingdom and the home of the "Queen of Fairies"--you!
