On Haunted Hill, this damp and dreary nite,
as the pale moon slipped between dark swirling clouds,
spectral shadows played across ancient tombstones.

Legends told, that in days of old,
the wretched dead rose up from the bowels of hell
to suck the souls of the pure and innocent.

'Twas such a nite, for the moon was full
and the evil incarnates were restless.

Three youths from the nearby village, seeking a thrill,
headed for the cemetary on the summit of Haunted Hill.

As they pushed open the rusty, wrought iron gates,
the grating sound churned their stomachs and sent shivers along their spines.
Hairs stood on end and goosebumps rose upon their flesh.

A thick and undulating mist unexpectantly appeared and wrapped about their trembling legs.
As they stood transfixed with eyes wide open and mouths agape,
gutteral utterances closed in on them--louder, and louder.

Unearthly sounds of howling and yowling, wailing and whining,
reverberated thru' this menacing home of the dead.

Rising fear silenced their quivering lips and rapid
shallow breaths produced icy plumes in this chilling October nite air.

As the clouds parted, they were bathed in the silver light of the moon

--and the three had become two...

Their comrade had simply vanished into thin air
--without a trace!

A sudden surge of adrenaline enabled the mortified boys to break free from their galvanized state and they dashed for the foreboding mausoleum.
Tripping and falling over markers buried under a blanket of dead leaves, they eventually reached their destination.

They huddled in the back corner of the damp and dank crypt and sank to the floor with wide eyes intent on the entrance.

The air was thick and stale and left them gasping with no reprieve.
An eerie stillness enveloped them as the moon slipped out of sight.

The silence was soon broken by a distant drone and they clung to each other in desperation.
The incessant buzzing became increasingly louder.
Trembling hands were put to ears to drown out the deafening roar.
Flailing arms began to thrash about in the vain attempt to strike out at the phantom hordes of flies.

The clouds soon parted and moonlight streamed into the mausoleum

--and the two had become one...

Filled with unimaginable horror, the remaining boy began shaking violently.
There, in the opening of the tomb, were the silhouettes of monstrous spectral beings.

As they gathered and advanced to the back of the crypt,
a primal cry began to build within his small body.
A blood-curdling scream soon broke free and pierced the dead of night.

The mortified boy clutched his chest as his strickened heart rendered its last beat

--and then there were none...

On Haunted Hill, this damp and dreary nite,
as the pale moon slipped between dark, swirling clouds,
spectral shadows played across ancient tombstones.

Legends told, that in days of old,
the wretched dead rose up from the bowels of hell
to suck the souls of the pure and innocent.

Toe, so that's what happened!

P.S. Which witch was it? Perhaps this angel could retrieve your soul for you! I'll do practically anything for a friend!

Suthern ~

Since you know Toe so well, can you tell me which witch sucked the soul right out of him?

To be perfectly honest, I think he was pulling my leg! He still has it! His "sole" is on the bottom of his foot! hehehe

(big hugggsssssss) Oh Linda, Noah scared! (shivers and makes nervous noises) This is a delightfully haunting poem, sweet friend, though I wish there could have a happier ending! LOL! I love it, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Linda, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Noah, dearest, I had forgotten how you dislike sad endings. As  you recall, I had changed the last stanza to a happy one, on another of my poems to accomodate your fine sensibilities, but 'tis Halloween and I want to give everybody the creeps! hehe

~ May your Halloween be a Haunting one!

I suppose if I told what witch I knew, way back when, that sucked the life out of Toe I'd only get in trouble.

So anyway, sweet earthy angel, this is great!

Thank goodness I am not pure and innocent.  There'll be no soul sucking out of this lady.

Wonderful story Ms. Witchy of the North.

Marti, ah ha! So you're not pure and innocent after all! Well, I guess you're you're safe from the soul sucking witch from the north. But considered yourself warned, doing good deeds or having purity of thought--- may lead to things best unsaid! heeeeeeeheeeeee

BC ~

Sorry, but it's too late for you. You are just too kind and gentle for this earthly realm and you must be sucked dry of your sweet soul. I'm closing in on you.
