    The Ash
(for Michelle...Oct. 28, l965- Feb. 21, 1974)

Like a feather it drifted across the currents
born of February
just one small ash
a piece of bone perhaps
torn from the door in splendid flow
atop a mountain wave

I watched from the ground on a blue day
wrenched with her presence still
as I had shopped and bought her favorites
my heart on automatic
forgetting she was no longer

Her dresses hung from one shoulder
tilted in the closet
and the precious pieces of her haunted
the floor in taciturn
where I slipped on them but could not bare
to close the door    no

Years clicked past like telephone poles
in a sleepy child’s watch

then today I went with frame of mind
all tucked and worn each year to fine wood
but worried that her ash had burned again
in a mountain that blazed to look like elephant’s back
the trees like tiny hairs across the top
it looked like that      yes
not a national forest…

but twenty-eight years ago she could have landed
in a dappled current and flowed like my heart
to the sea
yes    forever and always no matter
she is like dappled light

burned in many places
mostly though     in me

With thanks to Nan for help with photos...

and in my heart as well..............

I will never forget the way I felt the first time I saw that picture of her...the miniture image of her mother...both of you hold a place of my mothy heart. The place that I save for the butterflies.
The mountain will renew in her spirit...just as she inspires your pen.
Happy Birthday sweet Michelle...
Love you Martie

Martie, this is a beautiful birthday tribute to your sweet little daughter's memories. Even though she's gone from you in body, she's always right there with you in heart and spirit.

When I think you've touched the deepest part of me with your poems for Michelle, I read this and floodgates of emotion drown my cheeks in tears... this is simply superb.

Photographs of a stark locale. A haunting memory through which, one would hope, is the ability to occasionally set and rest near a warming fire, a lighter place.

A wonder this is to read and to experience. Words fail me on the tender of this, so only a hug can express...very gentle smile

Dear friends...thank you so much for the love you show in your replies.  Makes me smile...

the reply below was from my son Jay who I sent this link to.  Somehow when he replied, since he isn't a member..it showed up on my message.  Seems like a fine place for it to me

Thank you for sending that to me.  With your granddaughter sleeping in the next room I could barley read it, the imagined pain almost more than I could bear.  I love you.

Well, I am not good at figuring out what Things mean, but I loved the poem. The words were organized almost expertly, with a structure that you can't see, it is just there. Yes, I know I sound like an idiot

This must be a night for tears, Martie...
I just read the piece written by Mordecai's Mom...  and now this one...
The tears still flow
What a beautiful little girl she was.... and how very heartwrenching to have had to lose her so young...
Thanks for sharing her with us so gently
