Bedecked by nature, finely dressed
For all the beauty that’s possessed,
This bluejay perched upon my fence,
Could this old bird be really dense?

The calendar tells me it’s Fall
And he should not be here at all.
Do you suppose this feathered friend
Is bucking Mother Nature’s trend

Of heading south before the frost
In disregard of chilling’s cost?
Perhaps he only wants to bring
One last reminder of the Spring

Before the ice and snow begin
When Winter’s darkness settles in.
Is this a gift of his impart,
Instilling hope within the heart?

He looks at me and nods his head
And as his wings begin to spread
In graceful flight on southward wend
He sings that Spring’s around the bend.

I bid my friend a fare-thee-well
And feel the peace begin to swell
Within a weather-weary breast
Forever grateful to this guest.

And as I watch him disappear
I know one day he'll reappear.
Until that day I'll sing his song,
"It won't be long, it won't be long."

Denise - enjoyed this write. There was a robin in our backyard just a couple of days ago and I whispered through the glass doors, "hurry...be on your trip south soon." Here in Ontario, Canada it is quite cold and damp...I worry about our feathered friends that cannot live in our harsh conditions. Chris

Denise, don't be too sure about seeing that bird again. BlueJay Gumbo is a popular Caribbean delicacy down here

Don't listen to that bad Balladeer...that bird is tough...in many ways.  Loved your poem!

Down here in NW Forida the blue jay is a loud mouthed bully. They are the gangstas of the bird world.Thank goodness the mocking birds are not intimidated.I have seen one mocking bird scatter a mob of blue jays.

There's no tougher bird its size. I don't know about Bluejays but do remember feeding a male and female Cardinal out my window one cold Pennsylvania winter. Enjoyed

The blue Jay is a helpless bird in Florida. It can in no way stand up to the snowbird or the earlybird, much less the snowbird racing to get to Wolfie's in time for the early bird!

It is safer in Toronto.....

I bade that bluejay fond farewell
Reminding him that he should tell
My Passions friends along the way
I wish them happiness today

He stopped on Philadelphia's shore
To send you tidings "Evermore"
Now southward bound is what I hear
To spend some time with Sy and Deer...

Hey, well done!!! I especially like the ending, but I liked all of it, it read smoothly with consistent rhythm/meter. Enjoyed!

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

He's just reluctant to leave a good thing for a long hard journey... especially when he knows Balladeer is lurking with the gumbo pot! LOL

I enjoyed this very much, Denise... thanks for the peek out your window! *S*

oh, how beautiful!
This is so uplifting.
THank you for the treat
When I read the first line, I thought it was going to be about the raven.
I love blue jays
Love you

Denise, I hope it won't be long. The older I get the longer the winters and cold seem to last.

I enjoyed this so much; thanks for bringing the hope of spring a little bit closer.

Hugs, Marti

Lovely fall poem, Ruth! I've got the opposite here, the Northern Flickers have returned - a wonderful ground feeder bird with a black crescent neck and spotted chest -
and a distinctive call.

We also have magpies here in the fall and spring.

It is sooooooooooooooo good to open the page and find you~

You just send that Blue Jay to Florida ... he can stop off at my place and join the gazillon others here in the warmth of the woods~
(Got a double-barrel shotgun waiting for any DEER that comes trespassing looking for gumbo goodies)

Denise - Beautiful writing - I can see that Jay out on my fence now.  I winder if he will stay long enough to tell me of Nan, and you, and of others he has seen.  Perhaps not, but seeing him will tell me just the same.
