The cockie stands in barren field
to raise an angry fist to sky,
he prays today the sun will yield
and rain will fall on land too dry -
the crop is dead; there is no corn
and still he struggles vainly on
Akubra'd head in early dawn
shows helpless face for plant life gone

With bitter tears and curse to sun
and beaded sweat upon his brow,
his farming days have come undone,
he cannot see a future now
his valiant fist now raised in curse,
as sweat drenched palms are raised in ire
the only thing to make it worse,
is if the land was scorched by fire

And yet he struggles, prays for rain
to stop the drought and raise the land
he prays for life renewed again,
as watering done, is by his hand
he listens hard with good intent
to will the water from the clouds
his land is barren, sear and bent
as crops lie dying in dust shrouds

The lightenings flash, a drop or two
is all the rain this land will see
he stares into the sky of blue,
"Come on rain!" his fervent plea.
The cattle low, and faintest sound
of pitter patter can be heard
then, he slowly turns around
and weeps without a single word

As tears run down to blend in rain
A silly grin lights up his face
there is a chance of life again
and one small hope to win life's race
then much more rain, in torrents deep
to save that stock to breed again
although this crop he cannot keep,
he lifts his head, gives thanks for rain.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

Superbly done...impeccable rhyme and rhythm, filled with excellent imaging and powerful emotion.

This is intense perfection... the anguish is felt by the reader... as is the gratitude. Absolutely excellent writing!

The weather holds us all in its grip... I had to bail water out of both my car and my apartment last night... while others wither, parch, and pray for moisture.

God bless the rain
we are finally getting some, too...
perhaps the drought will break for awhile
just to see some grass blades smile...

Kethry, you are an amazing poet.
I so enjoyed this story, and how you were able to cause me to feel the anguish and gratitude.

Thanks, I really did enjoy reading this.

Terrific, Keth...an excellent poem to chronicle the worst drought in Austrailian history.

Keth beloved heart, how wonderful and beautiful is this which falls on my soul like the sweet touch of rain upon the dry parched land. How truly splendiferous your writing is. How often have I said YOU are a writer, not just of beauty but of power and real talent? Don’t answer because it is too many for you to count and still you maintain your innocence to how superb you are. The time beloved heart for you to admit that it is not just that I am biased in your favour but that my admittedly excellent taste has not led me into error, you are an amazingly talented writer. And this gem showcases it so well, truly exceptional writing, I love it utterly utterly utterly.

And I have not coerced or cajoled anyone to read you they do so because you are the kind of writer that consistently delivers quality work.

Love you always

Oh if only I could send some of the rain that's falling here now.

There hasn't been a day without rain since I came home and it's storming now and will be worse over the weekend.

Stupid isn't it, overhere crops are dying from drowning and overthere they're dying of thirst.

Nevertheless Keth, you wrote a beautiful poem again with a perfect flow.
