The schoolmarm and the pastor
Led such a sheltered life.
He said "Hello" on Sundays;
She longed to be his wife.
And anything to please him
Was not too much to ask.
She'd pull down the stars for him
And in his praises bask.
She had once been a loving soul
Showed that side to a few.
But as she watched her hero
She knew that wouldn't do.
So she became judgmental,
Critical of every flaw.
Whatever might find his favor
Became the schoolmarm's law.
She pointed out each person's sins
Her words were most unkind.
But to the changes in herself
The old maid was quite blind.
All she knew was that he smiled
At her and gave a bow.
So she became an expert
At holier-than-thou.
She built a comfy little nest
On spirits she had broken
As she waited for those words
The pastor left unspoken.
One day the pastor took a bride
And shocked more than a few.
He warned her of the schoolmarm:
"Be careful of that shrew."

sounds like the schoolmarm just needs to let down her hair--

or shouldn't I go there? *chuckle*

Thanks for bringing this one back up Ruth.

Suthern beloved heart, do you know just how special this is? I love it such truth such light and such a way of saying much more than is obvious, YOU darling heart excel at this. How is it, do you suppose, that your writing is so superior? You of course will deny it, but it is, vastly superior, you darling heart have such a talent, and I see it far too rarely. I know you don’t over-post, in my view, which I know is shared by others you under post, but that is beside the point. Truly darling heart this is exceptional writing, truth and a moral story all wrapped up in your wonderful style. Do I love it? Darling heart what do you think? Okay I won’t over enthuse, I’ll say I s’pose ‘tis okay But you can translate that to mean I absolutely love it, and I’d say it in my own quiet and unobtrusive way *Big Smile all you have to do is say Mushy and I’ll be there blowing your trumpet and reminding the world how special you are. (Of course you know I don’t need any encouragement to blow it for you don’t you?) Speak to you soon darling heart, ciao for now

But if we lose our very selves
In hot pursuit of what’s not to be
Leaving others battered in our wake

My grandma used to tell a wisdom tale along the lines of this...but she didnt do it with your grace of cadence. Since I am much too young to recall open 1 I am glad you shared this again so we can be reminded of this valuble lesson and learn from your example.

Suthern beloved heart up you go bumpity bump

Bev de bump came out today
I thought she had gone away
But she still comes out when I call
And so I said raise this one tall

A poem that is so superb
In every sentence every word
Let others read of this victory
Of sense and sensibility

YOU beloved heart can Write
The words that clarify the night
Too often a thought isn’t spared
And then the voice is unheard

But you, who write with humanity
You fill the sight of such as me
So Bev de bump just do the deed
And send it back to the top at speed

You know I love it utterly utterly utterly xxxx

Love and warm stuff
As always
Mushy

Breathe through the heat of our desire
Thy coolness and they balm
Let sense be dumb let flesh retire
Speak through the earthquake wind and fire

Your poetry has found its own special and unique niche here at Passions--and this poem is a good example of why that is so!

Suthern, being a "newbie", too, I am so glad that you reposted this. There is so much truth in this poem. You said, in just the right words, what I was trying to say in the poem I posted today. Your words came out just right, while mine came out feeble. But, there are a lot of "holier than thou" people in this world, isn't there??? Thanks for sharing this poem.
Love To All,
Ethel

Marsha: What a sweetheart you are... I thank you and Bev both... for both the bump and the wonderful poem... and most of all, for your unwavering friendship. *S*

Earth Angel: That niche gets occasional attention from a very lazy poet. *G* Most of the time, I just bombard poor Toe! LOL Thanks so much for reading! *S*

Tammy: I'm so glad you enjoyed. *S* You've made me feel much better about the recycling. *S* Thank you so much! *S*

garysgirl: I would never call your writing feeble... quite the contrary. *S* But I thank you very much for enjoying this! *S*
