The Gift of a Son
By Larry Chadwick

It came when it was least expected,
Which is exactly how it should be.
The gift of a son to his father,
Something he chose to do for me.

A fellow rarely gives up his ride,
Especially a Harley he adores.
But when I showed up he said,
“Dad, let’s take a ride. The Harley is yours.”

Our leather and helmets in place,
Mounted and ready to ride.
Into the Cascades to Detroit Lakes,
A trip that was taken with pride.

Three hundred and fifty miles we rode,
Accomplished without a single incident.
But when the day was finally done,
This old man was finally spent.

At Who Song and Larry’s,
We celebrated Father’s Day.
On the banks of the Columbia,
It made me want to always stay.

My son is as good as they get,
And I love him more all the time.
I never dreamed that being a dad,
Could ever be half so fine!

A son that would let you ride his Harley???? Damn, you’ve got a good one there Larry…he sounds like a great man. Sounds like you two had a great time. Glad you shared this memory, and the pictures.

My daughter won't even let me ride her Honda and you get to ride a Harley. Can you see I am green with envy and this time it's not because of your poetic talent?

Larry, as I write this reply, I have tears running down my cherubic cheeks. Literally!---well, the tears are literal but the "cherubic" cheeks may be a figment of my imagination! hehe

When a son gifts his dad in this manner, that speaks volumes of the character of the son---and of the father.

P.S. What a pair of gorgeous hunks!

Larry - this is wonderful!! Wait till my hubby gets home from work and reads this! He'll have his leathers on in a flash and bring his beloved Harley out of the garage for a quick ride on this cold, Ontario day.
Sounds like you have a very special relationship with your son. Bless You. Chris

so, your son lives in Oregon?

It's a great state with lots of beauty in varied forms!

This is great in its twin meanings!

I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

Let me know when you two will show up in the Rockies. (Sara and I just might be the mom and daughter team that passes you by on that mountain road on incredible 4 legged horsepower.)

Larry, this is so beautiful....the sentiments...the poetry...the pictures. Thanks so much for sharing your family with us. I'm enjoying it. My brother has a motorcycle, too, and he loves it. Before my daughter moved so far away, he use to take her for rides on his motorcycle a lot. I even rode on a few motorcycles in my life....didn't drive them, just rode. I have to say, it was a lot of fun. Thanks.
Love to All,
Ethel

Larry, a great looking son you have there.  Our children can often be our best friends.  I know you're very proud of him, as I am proud of my own son.  Much enjoyed both poem and pictures.

Tracey,
Yup I do! And he's 32. Is it me or is he getting old? Shocked even me. I didn't have the nerve to ask. But I always showed up with my leather. Maybe that was a clue. Thanks.

Toe,
Never have you been more right! And ain't it grand? Hope I never lose it. Thanks.

Keth,
Wait a minute. Are you suggesting...naw I doubt it. I know isn't that amazing. And just a ton of fun. Wow do I love that boy. Thanks.

Op4me,
Hey you have that right. And thank you so much.

Nancy Lee,
I am so happy you are enjoying these. Thanks.

Yup, it is a special bond. I hope it lasts a long, long time. Thanks.

WR,
Aww. You are so kind and faithful. Thank you. I appreciate your response more than you know.

Chris,
I'll be right there! How wonderful that you guys can do that. I know about those cold rides. Like rain...who cares? Thanks.

Nothing beats time with family. My last activity with my dad was a motorcycle ride. But that's another illustrated poem coming up! Thanks.

..."Now you will experence the joy your life has brought to me,"

It was said to me earlier. That says so much the character of both the son and the father. You are truly blessed. And thank you so much as I know I am blessed as well.

majnu,
Well for me...I hope so. Thank you for such a tender thought.

Beth,
Such complimentary words. I knew I liked you a bunch! And thank you.
