This fog and mist so dank and drear
to the skin sticks as does the rash.
As steps do slip on slime in fear,
a tree nearby falls in a crash.

My heart did skip as tongue was bit
from fright that came upon the din
of falling limbs that fell and split
the air of night in goose bump skin.

I saw a glimpse of glowing eyes
beyond the trees of cypress knee.
A cackling sound of demon cries
that froze my soul so hauntingly.

The dark now hides the path of day
and leads the mind to fearful thought.
What should I think or do or say?
What is it now that has been wrought?

They sit and watch and wait to find
a moment when I turn my back.
They are in front, they are behind
those ghostly eyes of red in black.

Away, away, I shout to them
yet all I get are curdling howls.
This fog and mist I’d like to skim
before the beasts begin their prowls.

Run, run, don’t stop or look around
for if I do they will devour
my flesh and heart on crimson ground
into the night of demon’s hour.

I ran and ran as my legs tired
from each step in this black of night.
And from this fear I was inspired
to race away till morning’s light.

The sun did bring the earth to see
and ‘pon the ground was such a sight.
The tracks of beasts who sought of me
to be their meal in darkened flight.

No print compares to what I saw
there on the ground so tellingly.
A foot and half, an awesome paw
with fangs to rip the heart from me.

I’ll stay inside and never stray
into the night beyond the mist.
I’ll lock the door and stop and pray
each time I hear that ghastly hiss.

For in the night of darkened moon
where things do prowl and bump the night.
Those snapping twigs will tell too soon
it’s time to stop, brighten the light.

Oh man... nightmares tonight.

What is life without poetry and adventure?
"Little sister" is just another way of saying "Guardian Angel"!

Barry...A delightful haunting tale...Paul
Do you scare all the little children in your neighborhood with these camp fire halloween stories?

This is a superbly chilling account of a man who is being chased by demons! --or is it a tale of a man who is facing his demons? hehe

---'Witch'ever, this is going into my
'ghoul'ary of favorite halloween poems!

A great finish, Barry!  Some scary images here.

The stars will shine when I am gone,
the earth will turn on as before,
the gulls, still race along the shore,
the morning star, still kiss the dawn

Yikes, you've scared the wits out of me! Where the heck is that light?

Remind me not to sit around the campfire with you if you're telling ghost stories. This is really spooky.      Hugs, Marti
