Philadelphia Smiles at You

Philadelphia smiles at you
From lovely Irish eyes of blue
On narrow streets , from history’s place
She’s waiting for a warm embrace

Along the black wrought iron fence
She treads the very steps from whence
A declaration on a scroll
Began to chime a different toll

Her hand will lead you there to see
The signatures of liberty
For those who’ve never come before
To stand in front of freedom’s door

Philadelphia shows her charms
And welcomes you with open arms
And from the deepness of her heart
Most splendid sonnets do depart

She stands beside the river’s edge
On grassy green of Boat Row’s ledge
Where teams from round the world compete
And place a trophy at her feet

Tall ships sail into harbor’s view
She’s there beside the docks for you
An Irish smile, warm and pure
At every corner, every door

From old Christ Church the organ plays
A hymn you hear for all your days
It settles in the soul of you
And in her Irish eyes of blue

Joy is what this city gives
For in it’s heart a poet lives
Denise is there, a friend that’s true
And Philadelphia smiles at you

Elizabeth, what a great poem. I want to pack my bags and leave immediately.
Sounds like a beautiful city, forgotten history you brought to light.

Thank you,

Liz, I have really enjoyed the poems that Denise and you have written for each other! Not only are they special--but the two of you are as well!

Gotta go pack now! I'm heading for Phildelphia!

Coming from Boston, I really enjoyed this Liz as both cities are so rich in America's history. And it sounds like Denise is the perfect tour guide for when we all get there!!!

This is a wonderful poem for your friend.

Liz

You write so beautifully.  I can't recall a poem of yours that hasn't stirred something in me.  This poem beckons me back to Philly, which I have enjoyed of late.

Now you know that is SO enticing to me up here right?  I felt that you are I were just sauntering along, and of course you had all the answers to my questions.  Can we go there too?  Denise, next time - coming to see you and the crow!  Lovely as usual and if people knew how quick you do these there would be a lot of open mouths

Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.

You are so sweet, Elizabeth! This is lovely, thank you! I'm honored to be called your friend.

Ya know? I'd love nothing more than to give you all a personal guided tour one of these days. There's something so special about touching history, feeling connected to it personally.

Thank you again for the lovely poem, Elizabeth. It's something that I'll cherish forever.

Thank you all for your kind remarks.
I'm glad you liked the poem DEnise. It is meant to kind of intertwine you and the city as though the city is alive in you. Don't know if I achieved that, but all the same, both share a rare beauty.
Thanks again for the raven. Forgot to meantion him.
Love ya lots

What more could one ask... Visiting Philadelphia with Elizabeth Santos.. showing Titia our country's history... seeing the 'Raven'.. Charles Dickens' personal desk... and having our very own reserved parking space right in the middle of that beautiful city...

One could ask for a lunch date with Denise - That's what..

A great time was had by all - Thanks for the wonderful reminder, Liz - and for the superb company, Titia & Denise...

Elizabeth, yes, you achieved beautifully what you attempted to do! Thanks again for writing something so lovely for me! I'll treasure it always!

Nan, we'll definitely do lunch next time. I'll make sure I have the day off and we can all go to the Second Street Tavern (on Second Street, of course!) that has been there since the Colonial days! How cool is that?! Then after some sight seeing we can hop on the bus and go to The Bard's, an authentic Irish restaurant at 21st and Walnut Sts. for dinner! There are pictures on the walls of all those legendary Irish poets too. Great atmosphere!

Maybe the next poets get together can be in Philadelphia and everyone can come!

WAIT FOR ME!!! if you're all going to lunch somewhere, I wanna be there too

Hi Liz, again you showed your mastership in poetry in this beautiful Philadelphia poem.

I miss you and I miss the children's playhouse in the mornings, where I could sit and enjoy the quietness while smoking my cigarette.

Hi Nan, hi Denise, miss you too

Elizabeth, this was a beautiful poem about a city I've never been to. It sounded like it's really nice, though. Sounds like you girls had a nice time, too. Thanks for sharing.
