She gave me shoes
because she saw
that I walked barefoot
through the park

Hand-carved heels
from Vietnam
sturdy wood
that boasted calm

I could see
the edge of knife
in the gulleys--
peaceful strife.

I spied the tacks
that held velvet--
but no, I had seen
nothing yet.

In the arc
where foot should rest
was a garden carved--inlaid--
mother of pearl
with dark nacre
petals in garden--
displayed.

"But," I said, with some protest,
"no one else will ever know."
She smiled at me so shyly sweet--
"Beauty is what you do not show."

The last line...
ah Serenity, and
you could have kept
it hidden!

Thank you...for doing otherwise!

Hmm....

I love the idea, and the way you make these images grow and expand.

But the last line is a bit of a take-time-to-get-used-to for me.

Though, a'course, we all say things like that,
realizing we haven't the influence or force
to make it so....

Loved this, Sen. For what it made me think of.

'... Beauty is what you do not show."...'

A very wise woman who gave you the shoes and so beautifully written. I liked this so much. And I even learned a new word, nacre.

Hugs, Marti
