~~~ *** ~~~
Have you ever thought
Of what you'd like to be,
A doctor, a lawyer,
Or be in dentistry?
Or you could be a pilot
Soaring through the clouds,
Or you could be a singer,
So sing out loud!
Have you ever thought
Of what you'd like to be,
A writer, an artist,
Or be a nurse like me?
Or you could be a captain
Sailing o'er the sea,
Or be a ballerina,
Now one, two, three!
Have you ever thought
Of what you'd like to be,
A poet laureate
Or teaching history?
Or you could be an athlete,
Competing with the best,
Don't you be afraid to try
To pass the test!
Have you ever thought
Of what you'd like to be,
An astronaut or scientist
In astronomy?
Or you could be in research,
Finding cures to help mankind,
Or you could simply waste your life
And just pass time!
Have you ever thought
Of what you'd like to be,
A constable, a fireman,
Or serving your country?
You can do anything,
But first you've got to try,
So get your education
And reach for the sky!
Have you ever thought
Of what you'd like to be,
A carpenter, an architect
Or in theology?
The future's what you make it,
So why not start today?
If you're learning all you can,
You're on your way!
Do you know for the future
What you'd like to be?
You have many choices
As you can surely see.
So come on, don't be lazy,
Just reach for that star,
But if you still don't make it,
Be proud of who you are!
Wow, this poem is perfect for the early stages of The Artist's Way, where Julia Cameron suggests the participant think about their dream professions....
I also found myself thinking about the line
"A Nurse, like me" and made me think....
In what ways am I nurse-like?
Thank you for your eloquent beauty and food for reflection and pondering.
With Passion,
Julie Jordan Scott
This if fabulous. So inspiring. Gonna print for a couple young people in my life, yet, even I am thinking twice, of how to apply it to where I am in my life.
Thank you
Linda, sweet, talented lady, in reference to your reply above, you may have changed your mind about "what you want to be", but I know for a fact that you  A-R-E   a very, very talented poet. You have such a strong way of getting across to your readers whatever it may be that you are writing about. One reason that I love your poetry so much is that I can tell that it all is straight from your heart. Thanks for sharing this good piece of your work.
Yay!!! Awwwwwww, I love this, this is so beautifully upbeat and encouraging and I know if we follow our hearts we can be what we want to be and I want to be either a singer/songwriter and if I go to a detour I want to be a teacher for young children! (and keep writing of course! Yay! (kiss on cheek) This is gorgeous, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Linda, thank you for sharing!
May love and light always shine upon you!
You would make a terrific teacher, as well as a fantastic songwriter---and if you sing as well as your words do, you'd be an superb singer too!---and of course, you will always be an excellent poet!
Well, my far away friend, this is about a superb poem as I've read lately. Lots and lots of thought and wisdom.
But sadly, you left out what I want to be. And that's a Princess!!!
Hugs, Marti
Linda, so very inspiring.  I'm also printing this out and giving a copy to my son and the children that live on my street.  Believe in yourself and you can do anything.
I thought about being a lawyer,
but then I remembered this:
How is an attorney and sperm alike?
It's not a complicated thing,
'Cause they both have one chance in a million
Of ever becoming a human being.
I thought of becoming a doctor,
An underhanded GYN,
"Doctor Toerag at your cervix"
Won't you come on in?
I could have been a ballarina,
I'm so graceful I'm sure you know
Fluttering by on tippy toes
(Adding in some dosey 'doze')
You're a poet-laureate,
And no one could be like you,
Only an Earthly Angel
Could write the way you do.
Toe, you just put my happy meter over the top!!!
---with your witty poem---and the knock-me- off-my-chair, last stanza!
You truly are a sweetheart of a gem!
luvya!
Earth Angel - great inspirations you write, and thoughts to ponder about. This should be put up on a bulletin board at the schools to be read...
Thank you for that suggestion! I just told my daughter, who is a new teacher, and she said that that is a great idea! She is putting this poem up on the bulletin board at her school tomorrow!
Thank you, Bill!
I love this poem. I had always wanted to be an early childhood teacher, but since I am disabled many people have tried to tell me I couldn't hold that type of a job. Guess what I found someone to believe in me and I was a great teacher for the kids. I still love kids a ton, but have started thinking more and more of the computer field lately.
Well goodness gracious this one has to be printed and taken over to our local school district office if I may?  You know of all the inspirational words in your poem I like the last two lines the most, for if you do htat one well, you have truly succeeded in life!  I LOVED this, and am really enjoying your writing (terrible at commenting these days as my volunteer work keeps me hopping this time of year) but I assure you I do read yours.  Thank you again, anything for to inspire people to try or reach for a star is an A+ in my books.
Dawn ~
The generosity of spirit of the person who believed in you, saw the real you and the gifts that you had to offer. That one act of kindness had a rippling effect. You in turn were able to reach out to affect the lives of so many others.
Since my daughters were very young, I tried to instill in them the importance of leaving this world a better place than the one that they were born into---and guess what!--They were listening! ---altho' it may not have appeared so at the time! haha
God bless you Dawn!--and good luck with your adventures into the computer world!
Mysteria ~
Sure enough! After reading your wonderful comments, my face felt sort of strange. When I went to look in the mirror, there was this big yellow happy face reflected back at me! hehe
Like yourself, however not on the scale that you do, I try to put back into society some of the good that I have received in my life.
I commend you for all your selfless and loving ways.
I would be honored if my poem could inspire children to reach for that star---but if they do not reach it, to be proud of who they are!
Blessings to you and yours,
Linda
