Castilian,”
She was telling the man.
“Her people had come to this country
Long before and at one time had land grants
Giving them many thousands of acres,
But, the war with Mexico
Had stripped her family,
Once proud,
Into bare existence”

I sipped my drink listening,
Wondering
If history
Got in her way today,
If she carried the resentment
Of her family’s loss still,
Or if it was just a point
She made to
Establish class.

She looked the part,
Fine featured and a beauty
That held her head up,
Looked you in the eyes,
Then flashed a smile
To disarm.

Castilian perhaps
But no longer
privileged
Except when it came
Her looks
And her story.

I paid the bartender,
And walked past her table
To take one more glance,
But she did not notice.

She only smiled
For her grandson today.

Su belleza es como la tierra
eterna y llenada de historia

This is a lovely moment of time you've given me a glimpse into, Ron. You captured the moment from your vantage nicely, and wove into it, the depth and history of this woman. Very nicely done, much enjoyed!

Best wishes,
/Kit

This is but one moment in the annals of historic injustices - Your depiction is an enlightening one.  Would that society might learn a bit from our ancestors shenanigans... Thank you for this glimpse, Ron...

"Respecting Beauty" ~ what a lovely, and apt, title for this poem.

Your eyes do see clearly--and with appreciation.

Ron, though I responded on 10/14 I was remembering the original of this you posted. I hastily responded to the original and just as I was about to edit out completely my response to the original you took it off-line and re-wrote it. The original was better, (my opinion) and if you ever decide to post the original, EDIT OUT MY RESPONSE TO IT, PLEASE, FIRST! (smiling, but ~very~ serious.)

You and one other poet here, seem to cause instant reactions from me when I read your poetry, and I am finally learning to come back later to re-read it, so I can reply in a more appropriate manner.

This is great however and deserves a little bump... Though I liked the first one better I still enjoy this a great deal.

Thanks, Pat

Excellent writing, Ron. Your words create the perfect atmosphere for this account..

If she carried the resentment
Of her family’s loss still,
Or if it was just a point
She made to
Establish class.

I wonder that about various people or groups at times.....
