Island in Paradise

One continuous stream of red
Rivers on asphalt meander slowly….
On her way to work
In the plush comfort of
Her newest BMW,
Her thoughts lost in her presentation
Of all the variables,
skillfully hidden in her
cunning calculations….

Bright sun and clear blue skies…
She lost in her narcissistic
world of wealth and Wall Street
Stylishly carefree……
Plotting her next
financial scheme
on her cellular phone

Meanwhile….Somewhere
the sun is setting
Over a war torn town,
Of starving people
Babies dying
In Mother's arms
Death in excess
Stench of sweat and blood
Sounds of crying
Survival is success

She wears only
the finest perfumes,
Frequents a posh singles bar
Entertains wealthy clients
Who entrust her
With vast sums of money
She understands,
Why one stock has risen
And another has fallen

Return on investment?
Or greedy human condition
Desensitized to reality,
Living for purest of pleasures

She wears the finest
Silken undergarments,
As she seduces her lovers
She's come a long way from hell,
To live in a sterile heaven
Of long days and short nights
She dresses in haste
Glitz and glamour
No time to waste
The world is waiting

On the way home, at night
Alone in a stranger's cab
She feels weary and empty
Loneliness whispers
in her jeweled ears
Riding through
a quietly festering
desolate ghetto
She shuts her eyes -
But a tear forgets to fall
She calls success her home
