I am a leech.

I cling on to living beings in vain hope of getting a share of their life force.
What is their secret?
How are they so....
alive?

I am killing everyone.
I was killing you, so you brushed me off.
You had a lucky escape.
Everything I touch bears the scars.
I've scarred you, haven't I?
Would have been better to kill you.

Now, vile and repulsive,
I writhe on the floor, scrabbling around for the life force.
People stare in disgust as I look hungrily up at them.

They are my prey.

I'm not dead, OK? I'm just a little electroencephalographically challenged!

I love how you explained your thoughts using first person perspective as a leech, nice work!

(big hugggsssssss) Oh Eleanor, this is so very heartaching, sweet friend, I too know that feeling where I just want to crawl around someones skin and walk around in it and try to get to know the person but sometimes you go too far and only cause harm! (sad sigh) This is heartfelt, sweet friend, I send angel hugs your way, you have my vote, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Eleanor, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

A leech... writhing on the floor...staring hungrily...all are excellent vision stirrers. *s

I think we have all done this at one point in our lives, trying to find out how to fit in.  Great topic for an entry.

Howdy y'all.
I've been out of action at pip for a few weeks.... this piece wasn't intended as a tribute to trying to fit in, although that's an interesting interpretation. It was more because I just emotionally scar people (want proof? Check out my ex, who had a nervous breakdown last week). Thanks for the comments anyway, and keep the interpretations coming.

PS: bsquirrel- you have an odd idea of what is cute, man! lol!

This works well as free verse because of its strong, emotive language and compelling, evocative images. Read it aloud and you'll FEEL it as your voice resonates with a rhythm which resonates with its theme.

Its theme? Well, in my opinion it can be interpreted as a type of allegory in which the poet uses the persona of a leech in oder to personify the abstract quality of dominance exerted by one party in a human relationship.

On the other hand it may be that the story underlying the poem is autobiographical. In that case the poet herself assumes the persona of leech in order to more deeply involve the reader in the emotive aspects of the drama.

Either way, its a very good poem and deserves to be included in the anthology.
