In an upside-down garden

She struggles to stand
on her own two feet
slipping on the ice-covered
sidewalks in front of the
candy-colored houses
she wants to paint purple.
her hair turning to ice
she attempts to avoid
exposure of secrets
riding high on the wind.
He promised she wouldn't fall
and slipped an arm around her
steadying her balance
as she laughed and recalled
a time when she didn't have
a friend in the world who cared.
The little one with the red hair
whispered in her ear one day
that he loved her, but he was afraid.
She mutters replies
tornadoes of words
she doesn't want to hurt him
but she knows she will.
At night she wanders
down ice covered streets
and remembers
he won't let her fall.
He promises that he's not
good enough for this beauty
disagreement is something
he won't take as payment
it's not worth the words
she uses or the breath
she takes to say it.
coffee colored eyes search
every soul for a meaning
glancing under stones
for a way out
an escape route
back into his arms.
He promised not to let her fall
she promises not to let go.
It's amazing the affect
ice can have on the world
when one is slipping
there is another to catch
and break the fall.
She stumbles around
slipping on ice,
tripping on feelings
running through truth.
The cold saturday morning
coffee eyes stare blankly
in her mirrored reflection
on the ice
and begin to warm up.
