Find a match and pick a place
Line 'em up and get ready to race
Rev the motor and watch the gauges
Slowly move into the stages

One hand on wheel and other on shifter
Let's make this all the way, not a drifter
One foot on brake, one on gas
Lights flash down and haul some ***

Back into the seat, she revs to 8
Shift now, don't do it late
She catches 2nd, the motor whines
A little fish-tail, watch those lines

The other guy is gone in the mirror
You still have an 8th to go and one more gear
She revs to 8 again and into 3rd
No sounds coming out your mouth, not a word

Pass the line and on the brake
You've never felt so awake
The motor slows and you exhale
So scare you are, you're face is pale

You're head now feels a ton
You just race, and you won
Out of your car you walk with a stride
Now kiss your girl, you feel so alive

Terms you may not know:

"drifter": when in racing something goes wrong with your car or you chicken out and let the car drift to the end of the track

"she revs to 8": in drag racing it's when the motor of the car revs to 8000 RPM (revolations per minute.. turns).. it's when most racers shift gears

"catches 2nd": when you shift into 2nd gear and tires spin a little

"still have an 8th to go": a drag race is one quarter mile... an 8th is half of the track or one eighth mile

"head now feels a ton": when you win, you get a fat head.. you're very conceited

That's how racing is

Ricky, I enjoyed this... you dealt with a very new theme, and noted it in your title... hehe...

Seriously though, great work.  You wrote this very well... the flow and stanza structure are both extremely well thought through.

Nice to have you back.  Oh, and thanks for clearing up that terminology at the end.
