...in my boxers...

Dry, parched ground,
all around.
No green, no color,
no sign of any life.
Lack of water evidenced,
as with an overdose of heat.
Rolling plains of hard, ungiving ground,
blinding light uncaring.
I look around, up and down,
naked, unclothed.
I am close to dust,
which flows throughout.
Close to my Maker I am,
on this dry, parched ground.
Calling out, my voice cracking.
The sound quickly fades,
and I realize desolation.
Desertion, depravity.
Myself my only physical companion,
my deepest darkest depths
clear as day in this...
this Isle of Solitude.

I stand alone,
in the dry, parched ground.
Looking around,
seeing nothing but dust;
dust, wind, and earth.
The sand flows through my fingers,
the wind blows it all around me.
The downward spiral of the chaos
reflects the inwards of my mind.
Yet here, standing on this ground,
alone on this Isle of Solitude,
I feel a peace, a calm.
The silence, the solitude,
the dust and sand.
They allow time to think,
time to feel and breath,
to sense the hot earth
flowing down my throat.
I am alive, I am willing...
willing to fight this battle,
the battle of life.
Because, I know,
I will always have the Isle of Solitude.

As the journey continues,
on this Isle of Solitude,
the edges of sanity
are unreachable.
And for this, he praises.
The vast, incomparable
mass of this tangible labyrinth.
He stops. Raises his fists,
and screams.
Only he understands.
Only he can comprehend.
And that is just fine.
The scars of determination
are a portrait of unbending,
unflinching resolve.
The scorching sun tans his bones.
The sand burns his tender toes.
But he does not notice.
All he sees is the distant
unattainable borders of solitude.

Note: This is a series I wrote a while back. I always said I'd post it as a single piece one day. Now I have.

I know I reposted these poems as a collection recently in Open, but I wanted to share them as a whole with this new generation of pipsters. Plus, it's one of my favorites.

Hope you enjoy.

Sincerely,
Titus

hmmmm I really like what you're saying in this Danniti. I crave solitude (how many times have I said that?). its something I need in my life to survive..I'll go crazy if I dont get it every three or so days. The only problem I had with this is the tautology.

Like "naked, unclothed" REALLY made me cringe, as well as a few others in the poem. Apart from that, you have a wonderful set of poems with a great transition of events. Loved it.

Are you scared?      BOO! Are you now?

Yeah Cherish - thinking of Titus naked and unclothed made me cringe too.

Seriously tho... not a bad job here, Titus... At first I was unclear on why you used third-person in the final entry.  When I read it over, I realized it was probably the narrator growing more and more distant from himself, to the point where he was so much his only companion that he referred to himself distantly.

Is that accurate?  Hope so...

Thanks, everyone. I appreciate the responses.... and, Allan (of Riverwood?) you may be write as to why I changed the perspective.... I honestly hadn't thought of it (of the change) before you mentioned it.

Sincerely,
Titus
