Friends, but More?

We are friends now,
but could we be more?
I don't want to ask,
and risk closing friendship's door.

New hope is on the horizon,
while the old torments from behind.
New hope is there for me,
if my courage I find.

Doubts born of past pain,
rear up and strike my speech.
Barriers erected through suffering,
are hard barriers to breech.

Are these thoughts of mine,
shared or mine alone?
One question to better life,
or have a friendship blown.

What would you say,
if I spoke my mind?
