"A 15th century statue of Adam by Venetian sculptor Tullio Lombardo crashed to the ground in the Velez Blanco Patio at The Metropolitan Museum of Art sometime Sunday evening, scattering its arms, legs and an ornamantic tree trunk in dozens of pieces."
                      -N.Y. Times 10/9/02.
.
.
.
.
Perhaps a prattling patron stated the date.
Fatigue of five centuries elapse,
knowledge that she had stood him up
caused his collapse.

Though of such pure marble and scholarly
sculpting realizes he's smooth
but no god.

Holding in that perfect hand an offered
apple in hopes she'd bite.
(it worked once)

Maybe he tired of that snake who'd sidled
along the grapevine investigative
reach too close to his fig leaf.

Possibly haughty in the praise of millions
he forgot; razing follows raising,
the shame of the naked,
the pain of the fall.

Like chasing Grandma's contact lens at the
reunion they seek fragments from the
unforgiving floor, numbering
the slivers, shards.

Instead they should name them: Son of God,
Married to the daughter of man,
Tender of the garden.

Modern hands will employ
mortise of mortals,
the paste of pride,
glue of guilt,
cement of the sinners.

Maybe she finally bit, and all that remains of poor Adam are those slivers and shards!
