Dragon, Slayer, and Princess

The Dragon’s warm breath
Hard on the Slayer’s face.
He has yet to take his sword
From its sheath.
But he is not afraid.

The Dragon, waiting--
Waiting for the battle of life,
Stares coldly into the slayer’s eyes.
She sees courage,
And is afraid.

The Dragon’s Princess
Peeks from inside the cave,
Anxious for the battle to come.
Who shall prevail?
Her capturer or her slayer?

Slow minutes pass.
All waiting for the first move.
Slayer’s hand reaches
To the hilt of his sword.
Dragon’s tail moves quickly forth.

Princess gasps from inside,
Steadying herself against cool stone.
Slayer dodges Dragon’s tail
Now removing steal from leather
And coming near to Dragon’s heart.

Dragon rears, a loud roar sounds.
Teeth bared, sharp and white,
Gleam as Slayer’s sword.
Princess fears and hides her eyes.
Dragon attacks again.

Slayer’s come back, quick and smooth
Puncture Dragon’s heart.
Dragon’s eyes no longer cold,
As she drops heavy to the ground.
Princess cries out loud.

Slayer drops to his knees
And thanks his God above
Dragon’s last breath escapes
And her spirit hovers near.
Princess ventures slowly forward.

Fear not of that with glowing eyes
and wings of gold and greenish hue.
Fear but that which is one's surprise
before the beast does have his due.

And from the lair the howling hiss
does come to fall on waiting ears.
A dragon in need of one kiss
to dry and take away the tears.

From the shield of tarnished white steel
and sword of long and sharpened blade
a knight shall keep from him this meal
till once again,  one prize...his maid...
