The Resilient Silence

His body prone against a loose sod mound,
devoid of strength.
The lazy mist of a granite garden
seeps into his brain.
Thickening, numbing.
He breathes the air of cut grass and flowers,
fists clutching the broken blades.
His trembling face soaked with dew and tears.

Inhaling deeply,
the fragile silence collapses under the weight
of yet another despairing howl,
delivered through exhausting spasms
of mindless heartache,
absorbed by the muting earth
and reduced to the sobbing question,
“What am I to do without you?
What am I to do?
What am I to do?”

The silence rebuilds.

Man, I could feel the anguish in that howl.
Well done, Tom.

Lots of feeling in this one, well expressed too.  Much pain felt here.

Strive for higher levels, if they seem out of reach... Grow, and they will get closer.

Thank you All.  I don't write much poetry but What I have written is usually on a more upbeat note.  I lived next to a cemetery for most of my life and witnessed a scene like this tree days in a row.  The guy started out pretty somber but ended up like this each time.  Heartbreaking. Thanks for visiting.

Gee, this is certainly gut-wrenching. Very impressive emotional writing.

Hugs, Marti
