Encased within a globe of bone,
I dwell,
my thoughts seeking clarity.

We’re drifting left,
but I am right.
Political correctness
is the key,
though not the one
that fits for me.

My values, virtues,
scoffed at.
I’m getting old.
Yes, I've been told.

The coming years will bury me,
in ashes
cast upon sand and sea.
Only then will you be able to walk on me.
I cannot compromise the man I am.
You’re a lamb like all the rest.
Go join them!

I walk upright
and never a lie leaves my lips.
I seek safe harbor in the truth.

I treat all life with respect,
from unborn children,
to a simple blade of grass.
I always will,
but still,
you mock the essence of my being,
for you do not understand
selflessness.
Your empathy is that of dollar bills
to a ringing Santa Claus.

Each year peels back
a little more of who I am
and the peelings hurt,
but I am glad at what I see,
for I am finally finding me.

I like the last stanza. Sometimes we must endure pain to find out who we really are. Nice write!!

And this is how we grow and learn..
To find and know our true selves,
has to be one of the most difficult
and painful tasks in life.
But, the most rewarding.
So extremely well penned Michael..

The best treasure that we can ever find Michael is ourselves.  Wonderful write.

(smiles) Sir Walter Scott is known for saying, "To be ambitious of true honor, of the true glory and perfection of our natures, is the very principle and incentive of virtue.". It takes time to fully understand our natures and it is a lifetime commitment, an ambition, to peel these onion layers away and uncover the gist of everything within! (big hugggsssss) This is fabulous, sweet friend, you are a wonderful friend to us all, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Michael, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shineupon you!

Michael

This: "Encased within a globe of bone," is so fresh and original...can I have it?

and the possitive feeling of your last stanza:
"Each year peels back
a little more of who I am
and the peelings hurt,
but I am glad at what I see,
for I am finally finding me"

Me too, I think...each year a little more.

Hugs, my friend!

"I treat all life with respect"---to me that one line sums it all up!

You also show respect for yourself and that is the starting point from which respect for all others follows.

As the layers are peeled away, the more of you we see---and the more likable you become, dear poet.

~ kudos to you, sweet Michael ~
