Moved from a shack to a barn

I see them, still
Lithe spirits
Dancing their celebration
Around my campfires

Their shawls and gauze
In giddy sway
Pay compliment
To leaves in breeze

Their eyes just reflect
The firelight
But, are lit from within
With the flame of youth

And it bothers me
That these beautiful beings
Who drank my wine
And told me their secrets

May have grown as old
And cynical
As me

In reply to "which way do we go?", the answer was never "straight", but, "progressively forward".

Thanks Fuzzy, but it saddens me to think these earnest young women may become angered that their SUV won't fit in a parking space.

ThisDiamond, I appreciate your comment here, and on my other poor offerings. Thanks

perhaps they think
the same?

your edge is so keen, Ed
it passes
before the cut is felt

I don't see the humor here--don't think you meant it funny.

But Ed, I hated watching every year toughen the skin of my children---and yet I lived in fear of them trying to navigate this world in soft skin.

Something in my heart just broke, even typing that, but I know that life is tempering---put the metal to the fire, beat the hell out of it, and you've got one mean sword. But I think too, of the card of Temperance, and understand, a blade of double edge should be wielded wisely.

sigh...think I'm giving myself a headache here. grin? love to ya, m'friend...you give speeches to the "ache".

We're all human;
and so, we cope.

Instead of grieving the loss of their innocence, you could rediscover your own.  It's hard to go through life completely innocent and naive--it leaves us vulnerable to a lot of pain.  Perhaps the 'trial by fire' isn't so bad.  It strengthens us, toughens us, so that we CAN handle whatever comes our way.
