somebody's dungeon

I dance with death again
for it still hungers.

When will the wage be paid
the sin atoned
and the taking
of the pound of flesh
cease to be?

There is little life
left to me.

Friends are few
loved ones are distant
yet still
you are insistent.

I tire of feeding you
my heart, my life
with each new death
more slips away

your hunger seems
past being sated.

Please,
I don't want
to dance anymore.

No more death,
please, no more.

Anne

show the bastard
your teeth
scare him
with the grin
of a survivor

Anne,
I'm with you!

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

I've lost so many. It seems each year, more and more. People from church, friends, family. This poem was brought about because my husband called yesterday and was feeling very ill. With the symptoms he described my first thought was cancer, a long time smoker who has just quit, and I was paralized with fear. Only minutes after hanging up the phone a call came about a man from church, who went into the hospital for some tests and is now in a coma. My husband thankfully justs has a severe fungus infection and probably ulcers. Could have been worse, and I thank the Lord that it was not. As of today though, the other man, a dear friend, has still not come out of the coma.

Thank you all for the kind words and it is nice to know you are all here with words of comfort and support.

Anne,
Go and seek out Elizabeth Bishop's masterful villanelle about loss, One Art. (I'm sure you can find it online)

And while you do that, I'll just sit in awe of your piece for a while...

tough place to be..in desperate want of no more death...i'll share with you...

CHAINS

the poet's words are fearful
fearful of the light
they search through tunnels
dark
for a place to hide
the feelings rage in agony
poisoned by such silence
no outlet
no way to stop the violence
her heart is pinned against
a wall
beaten as a slave
unmerciful reality
chains her to their graves...

i'm right there with you my friend..i know that feeling of urgent need for peace..comfort..silence...

death is not merciful..

take care..

hugs, g
