Over the river and through the woods

0 posted 2002-09-18 05:39 AM

sometimes
it will hammer me straight to the moment

how much blood we’ve bared

i tramp it through hallways,
skid over the puddles
and faceplant 3am, scaring the dog

i wipe fingerprints over the bathroom towels,
oblivious,
then raise them to wipe my face and
stare into the mirror, struck dumb

ill sit on the bed with my mouth open and think of it

all:

powerful as a bomb shattering children over the television

sore as the
  chords of the guitar
will tangle themselves to my heart and twist
as im walking in
setting groceries on the counter, lifting cans to the
cupboard and stand,
stupidly,
my hand in the air
clutching a box like a lover and sighing
but forgetting to breathe

always, i am stunned to remember
how i loved you

the seasons of it passing like hurricanes and
desolating floods,
like the startled flash of an eye awakened
and the wobbling heartbeats of trampled birds

Elizabeth,
I loved the last line it somehow gave the poem vulnerability.

The heart of you

Striking through the heart, there is found, something else.

Thank you.

Liz,
Your poems are glorious messes,
with a string running from each to each.
(that reminds me of an old poem --
I think I'll post it)

MIA is right, Sen. I seem to have left my poem on the computer at home. Oops!

I read this a few days ago.

So here I was, thinking I'd save it until I had something clever or witty to say ...

Then I realized I've been feeling neither clever nor witty lately so I'd better stop in and at least let you know I'd read the thing.

And enjoyed, of course.  The title was worth a thousand poems all by itself.
