Shall the bones from within the battlement
Fall with the long years of rot and foulness,
Compromised by the death of mother’s love
Fading through these spent seasons and unspent
Cherry Birch lining and shadowing the unaccustomed
Shallow halls of death lingering amongst the columns
Captured in the slow hate and draw of old, used
Songs whispering on Death’s haggard cheeks
With gall abounding pearly abalone shells
And summer dancing around the skirt
Of countless young men, their raiment torn
Where only priests and crows and earth may discover
The mysteries of each barren chronicle
Lined upon the steep but slow descent into
The folds of a mother’s breast, held
And absorbed by each soft sinking emotion of unyielding breath.

Each follows the balance distributed by the weight
Of a heart torn by remorse and tenderness,
And, with the quickening of the wind, alters
The fierce golden eye of an American sun,
Sturdy, tended star beguiled by ill-timed fate
Expressed in the soughing moans of some
Breeze scraping the remains of a bearded weed,
Some conjured magic in the uptight-glance
Captured in the aridity of poor, poor death.

For years the hearts pumped,
Strong axels of destiny,
And for years, they should have breathed.

Years of heat scorched my own breath.
Hair tangled in the comb of death,
I showered it away full of confetti.

It landed at my feet,
Stinging without rest.
