I'll never forget the conversation
I held with mom that day
It pained me more than she could know
To hear her beg me to stay

See, I'm the only son she has
The only man who stayed
My father died so long ago
His memory fades away

The phone had rang, and it was her
I felt it in my bones
I knew before I picked it up
She wanted me back home

We both knew the call would come
Beconning her soldier son
He'd have to go and fight a war
It couldn't be undone

Before she spoke I heard her weep
A tear rolled down my cheek
I wanted so to ease her pain
So I began to speak

"I love you mom, please don't be sad
I have a job to do
Just remember that if I die
I'll die protecting you"

I was reminded of the call I got from my mother on this day a year ago. She knew I had to go. What she didn't know is that I wanted to....... I had to.

Hey dog, did you see the size of that chicken!?

Kris---the more I read your work---the more I like it---and, the more I like you. Your sweet self comes shining through---and you're a soldier too? Gee! I guess that makes you a "sweet soldier"!

P.S.---How's your broken foot coming along?

Kris,  I know this feeling....almost 26
years of defending my country and home..
And I had to go...even as tears fell
from my eyes...it was my job and duty..
just as it was your own...

This poem touches me, and I am sure will
touch many others as well...  The emotions
of yourself and your mother are very real
feelings...I know them too well...

Thanx for this part of you...

This is a great poem and it was so good yet sad that I cried, and I felt the emotion and the tears that you and your mom felt. Thank you Kris for sharing.

Hello Kris

Your words touched my heart as I felt your mothers pain and anguish.  Beautifully written and so very much enjoyed.  I hope all is well with you and yours.

Take care......Sue
