The heart of you

0 posted 2002-09-11 12:49 PM

There will always be Septembers.
Months of time that will end Summers
And begin Autumns.
Days of life that will dawn cool and crisp
And that will set cold and chill.

There will always be Septembers.
When the call of the school bell brings back
The sound of children in their natural habitat.
When the call of nature’s last wind turns leaves
From darkest green to palest red and orange.

There will always be Septembers.
And, we will go through them as we have before,
With open eyes and hearts,
Bracing ourselves against the chill of a winter too near
While holding on to an Indian Summer too far.
We will remember the words of the immortal
Who said that “the days grow short when you reach September”
And, we will wonder again, just how he knew that.
We will reflect on the passing of years, from one to the next
As we hear the crinkle of the leaves once more beneath our feet;
And, we will wonder, just who takes them off the trees.
We will notice that the sun will set darker off the shoreline
As another day takes us closer to the final destination;
And, we will wonder if we will see the next one.
We will hear the call of the loon in the early morning fog
As they search for the meaning of the song
And, we will wonder, what do they sing about?

There will always be Septembers.
Just as there have been since time’s beginning.
Days in months in years of history and life.
But, there will never be another September
Like that September.
When the day dawned in peace and ended in war.
When the screams of children at play
Were replaced by the screams of people in pain.
When the bells of the school
Were replaced by the bells of alarm.
When the colors of red were not on the leaves
But were on the sidewalks and streets of the city.
And we braced ourselves not for the coming of the Winter,
But, for the coming of the darkness.
A darkness that we never thought would come for us.
And, we wondered, “how could it happen here?”
We still wonder that.
We did not see the leaves that day,
        For there were no trees.
We could not see the sun set off the shoreline that day
Because of the smoke and the fire.
And, we wondered if we would ever see it again.

Now, we know that the sun did rise again that next day.
And, with it, so too did the world.
A world forever changed in one bold stroke
By the hand of a named evil
That sought to hold us all in its grasp.
But a hand that we fought to be free of,
As we had done so in the past.
But one that will continue to grasp for us.

So, now, there will always be Septembers.
But, with the chill of Autumn they bring
Will also come
        The remembrance of death
                And the promise of life.

What light through yon window breaks?  It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.

This truly touched my heart. I know I won't ever remember Septembers the same again.

How did this get by with so few replies?

Romeo,
you have touched my heart and I think I'll miss the feel of it if you lift your poetic fingers.

"Oh, it's a long long while from May to December...
but the days grow short, when you reach September.."
The haunting melody of September Song played in my mind as I read your absolutely incredible piece Romeo.
None of us will ever look at September quite the same again...
Fantastic write...more please?
