Was it the burning churches,
pews tumbled down, stained glass around,
bibles flying in flame like moths?
Was it the crumbling walls in green-felt
moss against a chamberless gate,
an empty space once populated by people and deeds?
Was it the poorhouse graveyard in a quake
spitting up bones and worse, tumbling stones
like teeth from the ground's jaw?
Was it the carrion flowers, wildflowers
near the beach washed free of blood,
a soldier's bootheel polished by the tide?
Was it several thousand tons of concrete,
steel facades and crushed parked cars,
fires reflected in underground floods?

Her open arms, eyes and mouth
saying "Yes, Mikhail, we all must die,
but at least we can stay warm."

There is no ending without a beginning.

Thank you.

brian,
These weren't easy words to write.
They're still not easy ones to read.
Thank you.

MR,
'tis a dream devoutly to be wished.
Thank you.

Mike

tears aren't enough
to wash away memories
of where we once all were
in our innocence
before the steel melted
and the smoke,
instead of obscuring,
made perfectly clear
where the heart resided
here in the heartland

(tears fall down my cheeks) This is such a powerfully heartaching write, sweet friend, I am speechless at this time as I have no words to say in all these tears, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Michael, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Thank you everyone,
for your kind responses
on an unkind day.
